Fuel tank refresh

I have to remove an unknown amount of fuel from my tank before I continue working on the fuel system. What's the best/safest way to do this? Drain plug on the bottom? Energize the pump? Siphon? Probably a good idea to have someone on standby with a fire extinguisher.

Also, should I flush the tank with anything to clean it out? This car has been sitting for 8-9 years.

Thanks!

i jab this into the sender hole, or if you attach a piece of hose to the pickup end, you can poke it into the gas filler hole. takes a few minutes, but it is painless. i disconnect the negative battery cable, 95% of the time i work on my cars, so the fuel pump is out.

I just used the pump in the car - that's what it's for...

I didn't have a lot to do tho -- also don't let the pump run dry -- stop it right away when it throws air.

The bung will drain remnant gas as well. I'd take the battery out and far away if I did that.

My view on the bung is that if it is hard to remove it may better be left alone.

There is no battery at the moment anyway. I have those pumps at work - maybe I can borrow one. I'll leave the bung alone if it is seized up.

THanks!

You can always pull the rubber hose to the fuel pump, and let it drain by gravity, proving you don't have much left in there and have a big enough catch can.

search for a post by Jim Sims on making a - er - bung remover
he used some big nuts on a stud (yeh, I know...)

If it seems stuck, then I go with the pump.
