About time for new clutch??

Took my 84 Targa out this weekend, has almost 65k original miles on it, only 1.5k have been mine.

Anyhow, since I got it I have noticed that it sometimes doesn't like to go into reverse. Like the shifter just won't pop into the gear, usually I have to put it into first for a sec then try and shift into reverse. After 3-4 tries it usually goes, sometimes with a slight grind. The car shifts great in the other gears, never has a problem going into first. Only other issue is that the clutch pedal is pretty firm and the clutch engages about 1/2 way through the travel of the pedal.

Time for new clutch or something else?

Check pedal cluster bushings, roll pin, return springs, cable and proper adjustment. Also, do a search on "stiff clutch" of "clutch", there is volumes of info.

I had the R issue...Warren told me that not going into R is a common symptom of improper clutch cable adjustment, usually with little or no free play. He was right.

I'd check that first, sounds like your clutch is fine to me from your description.

Wow, thanks for the input. Sounds like I should try the easy fix first. How "firm" should the pedal be? I know it won't be like a hydraulic clutch where you hardly feel much resistance, but what is the "ideal" feel for a pedal?

Mine is pretty firm, I have to give it a decent push, but it doesn't feel real snappy past halfway like some cars have.

Even pressure that is not too hard push in, but isn't mushy either.

(Insert sarcastic remark here)
