Oil temperature sender question
Seems that little oil leak I have is the oil temp sender, cause the gauge no longer works like it should. It never goes to zero and never gets very far above the white outline. The leak is not that bad is this something I need to address now or can I put it off till I am forced to drop the engine? Or is it possible that the wire has come loose?
Dave

David, the oil temp sender is actually easy to change (based on the belief that you have a 79SC). I think the set of the sender and numeric dash guage is about $75 from PP.
It is about a 30 minute job, David

David, post a picture of the part you are referring to. If it is the temp sender, it is a very simple process. It does not require anything more than unscrewing it and replacing it with a new one.
You also want to make sure that the guage and sender match. If not, you will not get an accurate reading. I suggest you also buy the dash guage with the numbers on it. It is an inexpensive, yet practical upgrade. After you post a picture, I can give you a better assessment, David

More digging into the posts here on the site have led me to think two things.
1. The bentley book is wrong and the sender is on the rear of the engine to the right of the fan. 2. The gauge is not busted its just not a great indicator. Dave

The pic you posted is the oil pressure sender for the warning light on the dash.
The temp sender is located by the fan at about 5:00. The oil pressure sender for the gauge is right next to it and is a small cylinder about 1 1/2" in diameter and 2" tall. The pressure sender you pictured is notorious for leaks, either the sealing ring under it or from the plastic / terminal junction. At least this is how it is on the 2.7, I don' think sender locations changed on the 3.0. |

Rich, the red arrow is pointing to the temp sender, the part next to it to the right is the pressure sender for the gauge I refered to above.

Porsche-poor:
An easy mistake: There is an "Oil Pressure Switch" AND an "Oil Pressure Sender". The switch (Next to the breather cap) actuates the warning light in the dash. The pressure sender (Next to the right of the fan post) actuates the gauge to show actual pressure. The "Oil Temperature Sender" is as indicated by the above picture. If the oil pressure switch leaks, it can be replaced with the help of a light and mirror and patience.
