Oil (Again)

My recently acquired 1980 SC runs strong and fast. Last week I was at a stop light and suddenly the RPM went down to about 400 and I started blowing burnt oil out the tailpipe. I mean thick billowing white/blue smoke. After the light turned, it cleared up after about 30 seconds. It happened again the next day, but only once. Clearly a bunch of oil dumped in (the intake??) all at once.

Other than my hot-start problem (different issue, I think), this thing runs well. Any ideas? Thanks
Tim

Ideas ???

Yeah....most likely the classical "over-fill" trap that most newbies fall into. A search on key words will have you reading for days.... use the upper/right search button and not the one on the bottom.

In case you don't know yet, to measure your oil level, the engine need to be idling and at warn temp.
Look like you have too much oil in there.
This can only be one of the posibilities.

Oil will expand when warm. These guys are right, check level when the engine has been running.

Then again, I bet we could dream up a lil sump'n that would give that smoke a cool color and a neat smell! The next great ricer product...

Thanks all. The funny thing is I DID let it warm up, then checked. Then added checked added checked added checked. Unitl I put in almost a gallon of oil - and it was sitting at MAX. I'm thinking then that either it wasn't all the way warmed up or the cool oil I put in had not yet expanded. Anyway, thanks to all whom responded. And Wil - that search thing really works. I think this forum idea may just catch on.

I wasn't trying to be a wise guy..but the search function does work with the right key words..and it's not too well known that the upper/right button works much better for some reason...

Fill only to about 50% to 75% on the dipstick, again only when all is level, warm, and running. Don't take the fill to the max., I'm told. Mine sits at 60% of the high mark.

For sure, then. MAX is too much. you should try to keep it between the lines, not at the top line.

tcarney60,
I did the same thing when I just got the car. Even reading many "talk" and even I think I got it, still actually hands on will get you to know more. Now, I can just drain and add. 10.5 quarts. Done.

I had a shop near my work overfill my car. I was a new owner and they claimed they had worked on "many" 911's. After driving for 15 minutes, it turned into a street-filling smoke machine. I never went back to that shop again.

Spend time at this forum and you'll save a bunch of time and money by doing your own work. If you need to use a shop, you'll know the right questions to ask the mechanic. If he tries to BS you, look for a new shop.
