Replacing 2.7 in '76
 

I'm looking to replace my current 2.7 (113k with oil leaks and smoking) engine as I cannot afford a rebuild.

What should I look for in a "new" 2.7 or 3.0 and how much should I pay? I'm not looking to race but I would like some power and reliability.

I think a 78 to 83 3.0 is your best bet. Maybe $2-4K. Of course if the 3.0 hasn't been rebuilt, there's a good chance it'll need head studs.

I have a 81' 3.0 with 964 cams and arp studs ...in a 77' Targa, I've got about 6k in it with a top end rebuild(done by myself and wayne's book) and (Ollies mach.shop) misc parts tools etc...and it runs GREAT and I know its not tuned right to this day I wanted a strong engine, so i would not worry about a hot and weak 2.7 case in AZ summers...LOL and I rarely drive that car in the summer months anyway ...If you rebuild a 2.7 and you do case savers it will work out as well...My first 911 was a 76' spent 20 plus years in Tucson ,Az it was rebuilt at 109K...I purchased at 207K sold it at 230K and it ran just fine...BUT a 3.0 is the only way to go,...Trust me......FM

A 3.0 with under 200k miles that has very good compression numbers is your best bet. There are folks pulling those to replace them with a 3.6. If they have over 100k miles, they tend to be very affordable (lless than 4k?), from a private party. I would not go with a 2.7, unless it was recently rebuilt by a reputable place (receipts). The 3.0 with CIS is a direct bolt in.

I rebuilt my 2.7. Had fun and learned a ton about the engine. I don't regret it at all. However I think the smarter, cheaper, and better performing option is a 3.0 swap. Expecially if you are looking at buying a used 2.7 vs used 3.0.
