A/C AND IDLE

I have a 78 SC which runs very well, but when the ac is on,only, it will not idle.It will stall and easily start again. The normal a/c off idle is fine, and I never have a problem starting , either hot or cold. The a/c is cold and causes no other problem.

Sounds like the a/c pump bearing may be freezing up. Does the pump make noise when the engine revs are high enough to keep it running? Probably a good idea to take it a qualified a/c repair facility and get a diagnosis.

I DON'T FIND THE AC VERY NOISY. I DO KNOW THAT THIS PROBLEM SEEMED TO START AFTER THE BELTS WERE TIGHTENED LAST SEASON, HOWEVER I WASN'T OVERJOYED WITH THE TREATMENT AT THE SHOP THAT DID THE WORK SO I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK. NO MAJOR PROBLEMS THERE, THEY JUST SEEMED TOO SELF- ABSORBED FOR ME.IT TOOK A WEEK FOR THEM TO DO MINOR WORK, AND THE CAR SAT OUT IN THE RAIN ON AND OFF.I KEEP IT SO CLEAN IT BENT ME THE WRONG WAY.
