Stiff Clutch - Opinions
I've had the car for about a month now and just had a wevo shifter and coupler installed due to losing access to 5th. Anyway, the shop is saying that I need the clutch assy replaced also because of the stiffness and had me sit in another car that was definitely much easier and smoother to push in. My car's clutch is definitely much stiffer but other than that everything seems fine with it. I spoke to the PO I purchased it from and he said that a new performance clutch assy was installed with the 3.0 about 10k miles ago and has always felt that way. On Pelican, I've seen articles about checking the clutch cable and also the helper spring but a helper spring is not listed for a 74 to purchase. OK, I'm lost...any guidance out there?
TIA

Well it could be the clutch cable needs to be adjusted. It should give many more miles than that if it was installed properly.
I did have the same symptom with my clutch going out but it was with 84k miles.

My car had a stiffish clutch pedal when I bought the car. The clutch engagement was also just an inch off the floorboard. The mechanic who did the PPI adjusted it up a little. Anyway, I thought that the stiffness was just part of the the legendary 915 experience.
Fast forward two years later and the clutch pedal was getting low again. I went to adjust it but ran out of adjustment. First I assumed it needed a cable. What it really needed was a new trunion bushing and then in the process I noticed that the clutch pedal roll pin has shattered and was barely holding. It takes a Saturday to rebuild your pedals cluster with the bronze bushings and paint it all purdy. It's worth it IMO. The clutch is much smoother and easier to operate after the rebuild with a new cable. Here's some pics of mine: Fine tuning clutch cable adjustment |

Thanks for the input....I'll do some poking around at the pedal cluster and check on the cable adjustment before committing to a full blown clutch job.

I have found that stiff clutch is due to lack of lube in the vertical shaft in the bellhousing. Most people ignore cleaning and lubing their shaft

All the things listed...pedal cluster, roll pin, cable, plus the possibility that the clutch could be going. I just finished reading a clutch article in 911.
