Exhaust question

My car is a 1987 Carrera with a back dated exhaust, no cat, SSIs, and a Burch style exhaust, 2 in 1 out. The muffler is a Dynamax. It is a copy of a Burch only made in stainless and the muffler is straight through.

Here is the question: Could a cat be used in place of the muffler. If so, would it enable the car to pass inspection for emissions.

I would like to be in compliance with out changing the entire system.
