79 SC with 71k mi.- drive train noise.
Comming back from a road trip to the Glen last weekend, I heard a sudden noticable thumping with a rythm like it was a cv boot comming off at speed .
Slowing the car made it go away, buy then it resurfaced some 150 miles later, closer to home . The noise occurs in 5 gear and while at crusing speed . Shifting,or accelerating does not increase or decrease the sound, slowing seems to decrease it,and it fades then re -surfaces down the road.Rear Motor mounts seem fine. I have not checked the trans mounts, could they have set up a harmonic that sounded and felt like a rubber part thumping the bottopm of the car??? The clutch is fine and trans operates as to be expected.I am trying to get to the bottom of this. Any one experience the same isses? I hv inspected the cv's/boots and they are fine. Thanks Bruce

Look at the simple things first. Tires out of balance?

Good Point !
Tires are brand new and i balanced them , but that doesn't mean i didn't loose some wheel weights. But still sounded like a thumping consistent with the revs of the axels Thanks Bruce
