Way to remove rearview mirror mount?
 

I have a 1988 911 Carrera that I would like to relocate the rearview mirror to better fit my eye level and provide a better view out the back.

Is it possible to unglue the mounting tab on the windshield and reglue it at a different location?

Great question....also looking for an answer to this...

Plus..while we're at it, why not use a GM mirror? Heavier ( so it won;t vibrate like the cheap VW device we have)...and also the mounting post has a swivel joint on "both" ends...to allow a wider range of location on the windshield once it's glued into place.......

Have a lady friend sit down and twist it around so they can check their make-up. My wife successfully removed my mirror twice using this method.

The glass guys use a disposable cigarette lighter. Keep it moving around the mount and at the same time use a screw driver inserted through the clip with light pressure, as if you were unscrewing it from the glass. This is what I did and it worked well, Good luck not breaking the glass!

I just yanked the mirror off my windshield and it came right off mount and all. No damage underneath nor was there any glue residue on the glass.

Rear View Mirror Mount.......
 

A hair dryer or heat gun will do the job to remove your rear view mirror mount. The first step is to heat the area where the glue is applied. Keep the heat gun back and forth to distribute the heat on the windshield. Once the glue starts to melt or soften, the mount could be removed easily from the windshield. The glass can take a lot of heat way above the melting point of the adhesive.

Just buy a new windshield like I did when I tried to remove my mirror and broke the glass.

That's the point....in some cases these methods work..in others the windshield breaks...arggh..

Which is these is sure fire ( or mostly so)...OK to do ??

I guess it depends on the year, but on my 80 SC the mirror and arm slide right up and off the mount, leaving just the metal button glued to the windshield. Although it takes a good amount of force to separate the two after being mated for 26 years. I only know this because I knocked my whole mirror off and when I tried to separate the metal button and the mirror it took screwdrivers, pliers and four hands to get them apart.

I can separate the two, what I am wondering is if there is a way to remove the metal button from the winshield.

I suggest you just mount another one were you want it! ;)
Or like Hugh R said. Most of the time when you try to remove it.

Heat it up and use a peice of high test fishing line in a saw like motion between the plate and the windsheild.

A couple weeks ago, I removed my cheezy Performance Products mirror, with the glue-on metal button mount. I pried between the metal button and the windshield with a straight razor blade (in a window scraper handle, duh) until I was sure if I pried any harder the winshield would break, then gave up and put the mirror back on. Two days later, going over a bump, the mirror and mount fell off clean as a whistle!

I replaced them with the Genuine Porsche mirror, from our host, which attaches with pre-cut 3M double-stick tape. No vibration and easy to remove if necessary. Just remember to **gently** heat the adhesive and the windshield when you mount it.

Take the mirror off (leaving the button/mount). Spray ammonia or window tint remover (do a search for "C-64") on mount and all around edges. tape ziploc bag, cling-wrap, etc. over area and let it sit in the sun for a while. Then go around the perimeter of the mount with a new razor blade, "chipping" away at the glue in an inward, radial fashion. It may take a few spray/cover/heat/razor blade sessions, but you'll get it off eventually. You could probably substitute leaving it out in the sun with a heat gun with similar (or better) results as well. Good luck!
