Removing wheel bearing dust cover

I have a 1983 911SC in which I am replacing the front brake calipers and rotors. However, I am having a difficult time removing the wheel bearing dust covers for both right and left sides. Is there some trick to removing this?

Tap around the edges with a mallet. I don't care what mine look like so I use a flat blade screwdriver to drive it off. Once you get it almost off, grab it with a pair of Channel -Locks and twist/pull.

I use giant channel locks and just work them off. It does scratch them up a bit, so use a rag too if you'd like.

Yeah...I already tried that without any success. I don't really care what mine look like either...I have taken a pipe wrench around it and wacked it with hammer multiple times, they won't budge for me. I even applied heat to see if I could break it free. I have never known this to be so tight!

Big metal hammer and chisel. Put the chisel in the cap groove , pound, rotate the wheel slightly , pound again, repeat... after 2 mins. it will pop out.

I had the same problem on my 83sc. I tried everything else. .. this was John Walker's method. worked the best. good luck.

forgot one thing: put on ear plugs, it's loud and you dont want to blow out ear drum.

Try the "muffler clamp method" if you don't want to beat the covers up too much...do a search for that.

2 in muffler clamp

It fits right around the dust cap. Tighten it up and now you can pry if off because you have something to pry against instead of that little groove Porsche gives you.

2" muffler clamp, put the U bolt in the groove on the cap. Get a pry bar and work your way around the cap. I think these caps were designed to withstand nuclear blast....
