"About 7 years ago I installed the collars just to be safe. So far, no problems (though for all I know the collars have fallen off!). I guess if a tensioner did fail, I wouldn't know about it, because the collar would be holding it up. Kind of begs the question about the purpose of the tensioners to begin with, as I know you can buy a "solid" tensioner that doesn't move, and keeps the chain taught."

DDD,

If your tensioner failed, the collar would keep the chain from junping the sprokets, but it would sound like someone was dragging a length of chain through a paint can. A sound which can really ruin your day.

Solid tensioners don't 'give' at all, so they result in faster chain wear.

No such thing as a 'free lunch'. ;)

Les: Thanks for the reply. I've always wondered about the solid tensioner -- they are described as good for "racing" which I guess means good for people that are always tearing down and rebuilding their engines, since they are probably replacing the chain often.

Your comment on how the collars work gives me much peace of mind, since I don't hear the noise you described. Thanks again. --DDD

If you get in a jam with the car just stop by Airport Rd. auto and look me up, I wrench there, and if I can give you a hand I would be happy to.(not the company type but from me)

Holy @%$#$&^*&!!!11 I've getting some pulsation between 2k and 3k lately and was about to check out fuel and ignition... It's there both on and off power, was that your case? I take back my comments http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/a_frusty.gif

My pulsation was during light trrottle or while maintaining around 2800. I didn't notice it all the time but I try not to drive her at those low R's for long. I didn't check the terntioners when I changed them I just noticed the pulsation was gone after the replacement. I never suspected anything I just got lucky. Your problem may be a completly differant problem.

Either way, I guess it's time for the inspection that I've been putting off.

I agree with the "drive it home" theory. If there are no terrible noises it is likely that your tensioners are working and will continue to work for at least the drive home.

My mechanical tensioners are original and I've bought the carrera tensioners - just need to find time to put them in.

Cross your fingers and don't boot it.
