Interminttent Smoking
My 87 Carrera with 88,000 miles sometimes smokes while idling at a light. Its obviouly oil burning. It will then go away with no smoke what so ever. Any ideas?

My Sc did the same after I first bought it, Turned out I wasn't checking my oil level after the car was warmed up enough and had overfilled it , too much oil will drain into the air box from the sump tank and into the motor

My 87 does the same thing. here's what I discovered.
It smokes no matter the oil level. If I rev it to 5500-6000 rpm and let off the throttle, I can kill bugs it smokes so much. Turns out this is a classic sign of valve guides and seals wearing out. Apparently this happens to some 87's depending on how the car was driven (city traffic). I had a compression and leakdown test done and they are fine so I have scheduled a top end re-build. Should go in next week, I'll keep you posted. |

I had just topped off my oil. I drained a little off and no more smoke. Thanks for the clue.
