Please Help - Heater Problem
 

I just started up my '81 911 SC with the heater on and the passenger compartment immediately filled up with thin, really acrid smelling smoke. Smells like I'd been welding! It starts smoking anytime the heater is on and it seems like I'm not getting as much aiflow as I should. Everything else seems OK. Engine isn't running hot and I'm not hearing any strange noises. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to the problem and possible solutions as I'm not yet all that familiar with the ways of the air-cooled engine.

Sounds to me like one of the hot air blower motors is stalled and arcing - either that or it's stalled and the wiring is melting. There are two motors, one in each of the two footwells behind the curved panel held by three screws.

The motors draw hot air from the heat exchangers at the back of the car and blow through ducting to the heater and fresh air boxes behind the bulkhead.

The blower motor for the heater is located at the driver side top of the engine .When the heater levers are pulled up you will be able to hear the motor with the deck lid up
I would disconnect the hoses at the heat exchangers to see the air volume and look for clues .
The smelly acid smoke sounds like elec wires melting you may have a short in your dash or wiring to the heater levers somewhere
