Rear Wheel bearing slop

After "proper install of brand new bearings I am (was ) shocked at all the slop in the axle stubs, But the more I think about it with out the CV joints installed, and torqued, there is probably no way to have snug ball bearing- fit w.o. the preload......right ??

When I installed my rear bearings, there wasn't any play to speak of. You might try a trial install & bolt the whole thing together to see if you still have some play.

There shouldn't be any play. I would have to believe that something is amiss. Putting the whole thing together (outer hubs and axles) and torquing the large nut should snug everything up. If you've done that and still have some movement, then something's wrong.

When I did mine a couple of years ago, there was no discernable play.

Mike said it: there should be no play.
Attaching the CV joints has nothing to do with the stub-axle-play.
The correct torque for the big nut is around 220 ft-lb and can only be done with a 3/4 drive long, LONG breaker bar. (Unless you have a big impact)
Here is how: Wheels mounted without center cap, emergency brake on, in reverse gear, big socket with short 3/4 drive extension, 3/4 drive breaker bar with extension.
But, first make sure that the bearings/parts were installed correctly

Afterburn - what was the outcome for you - ?

Did play disappear or remain after assembly and all torquing?

Please share all details, I've got this same problem on one hub after new rear bearing install..

thanks,
Jim

stretch bolts hold the flanges to the differential spiders...as for fixing I have improved it but there is still something more stretched then what I replaced...........I going for all new cv joints next see what that dose..

Wait....the axle is moving in and out? IIRC, the CV joints should have no bearing on that. The inner point of the axle moves in and out of the trans as the suspension moves through it's travel. Something isn't right..were the parts pressed completely?

Excessive play can be a significant issue..the brake rotor will have excessive play which pushes the pads back and makes for a long pedal travel, among other problems.

Afterburn,

You shouldn't have any axial play when pulling the wheel/hub back and forth, but you may have some when rocking the wheel at 6 - 12 o'clock. My bearings have about 1000 miles on them and there is detectable play when rocking the wheel. I can only feel it though when the wheel is attached, not by moving the hub alone. Also, one side has slightly more rock than the other.

Yea thats how this all started -wheel bng slop...thought I would address the other issue s while thereith......20 20 hind sight had the cv joints all apart to do over I would (will) buy new as there is tracks in the outer race where the balls work. I am thinkin that maybe the big deal here (hope) All the work to replace boots and repack old joints just is not worth it-- imo 20 20/ hind sight !!!
