ignition wires-make your own?
 

I have a 83SC with stock ignition wires, while the car runs good it's a matter of time before the wires will need replacement. Rather than buy new wires I'd like to replace just the cable and reuse the OEM ends. The ends are "screw" type and I measured the O.D. of the wire without braid and it's 7.39mm so is that considered 7mm cable? And what kind of cable do you buy-standard copper or something else? I went to the Kinsborne site and they sell different wire with different ohm resistance how do you know which to buy? I've done a "search" and I know there are good aftermarket wires but I really like the way the OEM ends fit the plugs. So for you guys out there that have done this bring me up to speed please. Good luck finding stranded copper ignition wire.

I made up a set for my lower plugs on my 86 and used some bulk Beru wire with some old stock ends and used new m-3 screw ends, the cost was next to nothing, the big ticket items are the ends (boots) if you dont already have them.

I got the Kingsbornes and I really like them. I kept the OEM Beru's to put on the ends. The set from Kingsborne came pre-assembled, with separators, M3 ends crimped on and heat sheath for about $100. Call the guy at Kingsborne and ask him what you need. He's up to speed, and very accommodating.

When I had my '79, I bought a set of Bosch wires and trimmed them for a custom fit, then re-used the Beru connectors. I went as far as threading them through the woven steel sleeves, and that car ran great for the next 2 years, until I sold it.

I don't see any problem with it. I have custom cut ignition wires for several of my cars, and they have all run well afterwards.

Cake walk, go to NAPA . Get marine ign wire (Bulk) Put the old SS stuff on them will work just as good as a 300.00 set. They are solid core so you get the same results.

I bought a roll of 9mm MSD wire from Summit Racing. Had to shave the insulation down abit to fit into the boots but it works great. Check all your connectors before you finish this job. I had to replace a couple due to high resistance. Normal resistance seems to be about 1K ohms. Got some good used ones from Parts heaven (had to take my ohm meter in though as they don't check the resistance).

I found a guy by the name of Mark Robinson that makes up custom Beru wire sets, apparently he has a set of special crimpers for putting on the ends, you reuse your connectors, he only supplies the wires.
I had him make up a couple of custom coil wires for my 993 distributor twin plug conversion I did, they look like factory, he got them to me within a couple of days and they were very reasonably priced.

Really!? Man, I bought Kingsborne after doing some research adn they did not last 4 months before the light show started again. Maybe I got a bad set?

I heard/read of light show almost 10 times already. Anyone got picture?
