1st Gear
I seem to grind my first gear a lot (I have a 1983 911 SC). My father-in-law is the original owner of the car. My wife drove the car as a teenager and has driven it since we've gotten it and says that the car never used to have that problem.
From what I've read using the search function, it sounds like I need new synchro rings. Does the engine and transmission together have to be dropped to do this? Is it something that someone smart enough to figure things out but with little actual experience can do? Is this subject covered in any book? Thanks for your help?

Check out the following link. Lots of info and detail with good quality photos outlining the process.

When does it grind into first? Stopped or down shifting?
If stopped, try going into first from second. If while down shifting, you need to match the rpm's with the throttle. Not sure if this is the problem, but they all grind into first if not properly motivated. Paul
