Looked at '75 911S, Need Opinions Please
Hello Everyone:
Need your opinions regarding the following please: Looked at 911S this morning being sold by a physician who seems to be aloof when it comes to 911 specifics. Car was as follows: *Body in Great shape... No evidence of rust was found, significant or otherwise *Red paint... Poor to average respray *Black dash with one small crack, otherwise very good condition *Tan interior.. Seats great, carpet great, window seals great, all mechanicals (lights, wipers, fan, etc.) work *5-speed shifts good to great *Fuchs black in good condition *Fairly recent new fuel pump and brake calipers and pads with reciepts Here's the kicker: vin showed correct (as advertised) '75 911S but engine that owner claims was rebuilt by previous owner (no reciepts) is not correct... Engine number indicates it's a '73 911T motor. *Motor is very strong and runs very well Car needs: ^New paint (poor repray) ^Various oil lines that are slow leakers ^Valve adjustment ^Other odds and ends like a new sidview mirror, etc... (putzy stuff) Owner is a physician who seems honest and fairly oblivious to the details of a 911. Seemed to become agitated when wife mentioned to him my 'finding' that the motor was not correct. He's asking 12,5K which I felt was too much with the correct motor but as is I said I might consider something in the 8k range. His wife said she'd tell him (he was golfing at the time) but didn't think he'd come down nearly that much. I showed her where the motors id number is and said he could call a Porsche dealership to verify what I'd said and that my offer to consider still stood. That was it. I loved the car... Yes, needs work but that's what I'm looking for... Well, work short of a motor or tranny rebuild anytime soon... Wondering if I should have offered a little more and bought it on the spot (cash). What do you all think? Thanks... Eric Last edited by Eric-325I; 07-03-2006 at 12:33 PM.. |

I'd say keep looking. Way too much going on. I know it's not what you want to here but the price is high and the known issues are already scary let alone the unknown ones.

Is it CIS, carbs, or ?
Sounds like a frankenporsche. No way is it worth $12K. Maybe $8K. *Maybe*. Since there is no paperwork (and wrong engine to boot) you have to assume the motor has not been recently rebuilt (if ever). Consider that your resale value will be very low, and it sounds like a neglected car/clueless owner combination. Not good. |

Have all the updates been done? 11 blade fan, tensioners, studs, oil cooler. I paid near there for mine but all updates had been done, mine came with papers and no Doc attitude to put up with and was a silver anniversary edition to boot. Sounds like the Doc needs to wake up. He might not take you offer of 8 but I bet he takes the next offer of 8. Good luck. You might want to have a friend go and offer 8400.00 in a couple of days. Good luck.

Is it an 85 as mentioned in your text - or a 75 as in the title? I'll assume it's a 75 and whoever changed the motor may have not liked the 2.7 liter engine, and replaced it with a smaller 2.4 liter.
With a bad re-spray, I'd worry about prep work. Why was it re-painted? Accident? Rust? Either way, not good. For $12.5, it should be nearly perfect. I'd subtract the cost of a paint job, and a suspect engine rebuild........it adds up fast. If you are looking for something to tinker with, decide if you want to do just mechanical stuff - then get a really good looking car that needs some TLC. If you want some body and paint experience, offer the guy much less than $12.5. If he doesn't take it, move on.

'73 T motor, or '73.5 CIS motor? Could it be that an earlier case was used and the barrels are 2.7? There are a lot of possibilities here. Cars that sell for 12K for this year come complete with all records and are very straight and clean, not to mention well maintained. The good doctor will wake up sooner or later.

Patience my friend
I have bought and sold several cars on Craig's List recently. It took me a few months to find my Lexus SUV but it was worth it and the car is pristine.
My 74 Porsche is scary fast---6 webers, JE forged pistons, Garrettson G 60 cams. Attached is a picture from the day I bought it. Ever day I got up and checked for Porsche in Craig's List from Seattle to Los Angeles---basically the distance I would be willing to travel. The first two cars did not pass PPI so I kept looking. FInally I found this beauty, although cosmetically challenged and some needed tweaks to the carbs. 7/8 fuchs and like new tires. This one passed leakdown and major mechanical. Drive up in a rental car, picked up the 911 and was off. $8500. The only 75-77s I have seen that are any good have had the engine overhauled and all the major mods done as well as air pump and other junk removed. You have to kiss a lot of frogs to get the princess but they are out there. Also note the RS steel fenders. This car does 0-60 in about 5 secs and still pulls at 7k RPM In short I agree with the other guys. Run from this roach! ANd come on. Dealing with a doctor. Hell that is riight up there with lawyers. You don't think all that KY and those gloves are for physicals do ya? ANd my step dad is a DR and he will nickel and dime you down till you will want to give him the car just to be rid of him. Talk about a horse trader. All these rich guys think they have the best of everything and expect YOU to pay for it. ANd you can't convince them otherwise. I listed this old clunker Packard of his twice on Ebay and the best offer was $5800 and he expects $15k so it sits in the street. ![]() ![]()
