Question 1975 911S running temp

Need some feed back as to the proper oil temperature for a 1975 911S - 2.7L. Seems to run between 180 and a little over 210 depending on the weather temperature. Is this common? Am using 30/50 oil.

besides the regular changes to get temp down, eg 11 blade fan etc does it make sense to put in an oil cooler in this model or are they even made for this year of car?
Thanx
Bruce

Your oil temps are fine! External oil coolers were an option for 1975 and could be added but it appears you don't need one unless you move to Arizona or add A/C or track (race) the car.

Hi Bruce, (and Smitty!),

My '76 runs 180-190 if traffic is moving and the weather is other than the hotter-than-hell that it is right now in SoCal.

If its a little warmer, say 85 - 90 degrees and I am still not stuck in traffic it will go 210. Only once have I been stuck in heavy traffic and it got up to an indicated 230 or more. It made me pretty nervous.

I have no external oil cooler and I am conscious of it. I'd like to put one in but since I don't drive it as a daily it isn't THE priority right now.

Personally, I would not be comfortable with the car at 250 degrees. I am pretty sure I'd shut it down if it was approaching much over 230....but I suppose I have that luxury since I don't use it as a daily driver.

I use Castrol 20-50w, have an 11 blade fan (1st owner put it in early). To answer your last question, yes lots of 2.7's have coolers. A lot of guys here will tell you the trombone cooler is almost worhtless. I plan on putting in a Carrera cooler at some point with a fan but probably manually actuated.

A trombone cooler does a lot of good on a 2.7l compared to just having the stock engine mounted oil cooler (dropped oil temps 20 to 30F on my '76 2.7l - I rarely get above 215 F even with the A/C operating) and is likely more than sufficient in B.C.'s climate.

Dan, when I stated 250 I meant it as the limit. When I had the 2.7 and did autox in NM the car would get up around 240 and stay there...but once it did hit 250 and we shut it down and let it cool off. No damages, just made sure to change the oil and get some fresh stuff in there for daily driving. I have seen cars ran all day at pretty high temps and no issues.
