Internal Thermostat
So, as part of the 3.0 rebuild with the BAE kit, I figured I'd better check out my thermostat. The reason I took the engine apart last month was because it was running very hot, even with a Mocal external cooler, and leaking badly.
Using the setup pictured, I found that the 3.0 stat didn't open.I took it apart, cleaned it, reassembled, nothing. I pulled out only the thermostatic plunger, dropped it in the bucket, and, well, it didn't plunge. The plunger extended about 1/16". In the picture is a stat from a 2.4 engine. It opens...at 185F. However, it stays open down to about 160-165F. After dinner, I'll take the 2.4 stat apart, clean it and duplicate the test. Any comments on the test setup? I have assumed it's ok to test in water...kinda tough to explain the boiling pot of 20W-50 in the kitchen. Pat ![]()

Hey Pat
I've tested T-stats using the method you show. Good ones open just before the water boils (at about 180-190 deg).
