shops between chattanooga and cleveland, OH
I'll be making a road trip from Chattanooga to Cleveland, OH at the end of the month, and am trying to convice myself to drive the 911.
I'd ride more comfortably if I knew of some good shops along the way in case a mechanical problem pops up that I can't take care of myself. I don't anticipate anything happening, but better safe than sorry Any suggestions?

Bruce,
If you happen to have a problem after you make it into N.E. Ohio there is a great shop about 45 minutes South-East of Cleveland. Gotcha covered for the northern part of your trip. Check them out here.... www.steinels.com Gary

Thanks, Gary - I'll print the information and carry it in the glove box for reference. I'll be in Cleveland for the Annual Convention of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. Looking forward to a great time. Appreciate your information.

I can second the recommendation for Steinel's. My first and only 911 went to them right after the purchase. It needed tuned, wouldn't idle, etc... It was a totally different car when I got it back. That was six years ago and it hasn't missed a beat since. Very easy to work with. Take the 911 and enjoy the trip!

Thanks for the second, Steve.
I'm sorely tempted, but have never taken a long distance ride in the car (this trip is 610 miles each way). I'm also concerned about leaving it in the hotel parking lot for several days. The factory alarm is non-functional. What is the best way to provide some protection while leaving the car unattended for several days? Not sure if I'll be in a garage or an open lot. Can anyone ease my mind?

Can anyone ease my mind?" That depends, where is the hotel?

I'll be at the Crowne Plaza on St Clair Ave in Cleveland. They tell me there is a garage, and, of course, will not admit to any problems with guests cars.

A car cover is always good with a cable lock. It keeps the car from being noticed and out of the rain.

I can suggest someplace in Cleveland TN but I think you are going the other way.

Re: Hotel
I work about a block from there. That is actually a pretty quiet part of downtown, mostly office buildings and the like. I doubt you would have a problem in the parking garage. I wouldn't recommend the valet thing though.
If you need ideas on where to eat or things to do I can recommend a few places as well. Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of things happening in downtown Cleveland. That is a central location and you can walk to just about everywhere. 911's are known for their reliability and if you enjoy driving the car it would be a fun trip. I drove a friend's 85' Carrera from Dallas to Cleveland a few years ago. It was a blast and surprisingly comfortable on a long trip. Good luck and enjoy, whatever you decide. -Steve |

I'm in Akron Ohio about 45 minutes south of Cleveland. I've got a car trailer and truck if you get stuck and need to get transported to a garage. Email me offline for a phone number. I do my own work but I've heard Stienels is very good. That said, your car should be just fine on a trip that long. Heck mine has all sorts of things that need attention yet it made the roundtrip from here to Detroit (about 360 miles total) with no problems.

Back the car into the stall, 1st gear and emergency brake on, remove the DME relay, buy a battery operated led flasher and place it so it looks like an alarm flasher.

Christian, you have a PM.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll be hitting the road on June 21. I've decided to drive the 911, and with a spare DME relay, a AAA card and the information you all have given me, I'm looking forward to the drive.

Have a safe trip. It is good to see other members from my home town. I grew up in Ooltewah and lived in North Chattanooga for years.

Well, it was a great trip! The car behaved beautifully and was a joy to drive over the long distance. 600 miles up on Wednesday, and back on Friday - I'm tired, but smiling. Only problems along the way were the oil level guage quitting (nice to have working but not reliable, as we all know) and a rock took out one of my fog lights.
Appreciate all of the suggestions and offers of assistance. I'll be much less hesitant to long distance with the car again.
