Both headlight out???

Okay, both my headlights are not turning on all of a sudden. Front fog lights won't come on either. All the other lights on the car work fine? 79sc no other electical issues.

So, I guess this is a fuse? Which fuse is it, in the trunk right?

Any other ideas. They were working fine yesterday.

Thanks for the help.

Older cars, sheesh.

Headlamps have four independent fuses ... the common point of failure is the control stalk switch which carries all of the current!

There are temporary fixes by cleaning and filing the switch contacts ... but, ultimately it will need to be replaced! Relays need to be installed to circumvent future failures of this type!

huh? I read a thread here, someone was saying the headlight system in our car doesn't have any fuse at all. That's why he suggested to at a 3amp fuse right at the switch at a pole something like 85L or 86L. This is why I spent all day today working on it and I actually... fried my switch

You mentiioned clean the switch contact. Do you mean headlight switch? Does that mean you can open the internet of the switch apart or you mean just the poles/plugs?

rnln,

All 1965 thru 1989 911 models have four fuses for the headlamps! What they don't have is relays to carry the switched current ...

The switch I was referring to that can be cleaned/filed is the control stalk switch, not the main light switch!

dash lighting power wire from sw, not headlights get the 3amp fuse.

Does that mean if I install a relay for for each headlight, and foglight, my lighting will be better/brighter.. another project to think about.
Thanks.

Similar thing happened to me recently. It turned out that a wire from the headlight switch was loose. When I got in the car one day I knocked the wire off the switch completely and - no headlights. Reconnected the cable and all was fine.

rnln,

Generally, yes, for the headlamps. Fog lamps already have a relay.

Reliability will be enhanced over what left the factory ... a ticking timebomb waiting to fail! Losing all of your headlamps at night , many miles from home or civilization is no laughing matter!
