Porsche Crest Electric Seat Drivers Side- Forward/Backward Failure

The forward/backward movement on my 8 way driver's side seat has just bugged out... I hear the motor noise, but no movement.. other adjustments work fine...

Any suggestions?

Ready to pull the seat out and see if a coin or something got in the track...

Thanks!
Patrick

Electric Seat Drivers Side- Forward/Backward Failure

I just had the same failure in my 88 911 Carerra -- driver's side also. Wrench told me the switches, backward, forward, were out. The dealer said they were $100 each, but you can find them for cheap on ebay.

Spec, There is a threaded rod that spins with a matching sleeve that moves the seat for and aft. If your motor turns, it sounds like the sleeve came off or broke. You need to remove your seat to look at/ repair it.

Check to make sure that the bolts securing the seat rails haven't backed out.

I'm with C U L8R on this one cause the motor still works when the switch is pressed.

hey Spec, my '88 930's driver seat has just come down with the same flu symptoms your Targa had. Did you fix the problem, if so what did you need to do?

I also can hear my motor/switch working but there's no movement only from the side closest to to the shifter. The left side near the door does move, but it makes the seat distorted so I am careful not to touch the switch as to not break the seat.

any helpful info is much appreciated.
Eddie

I looked at the motor assembly, and see the two white plastic gears spinning.. they should be engaged I presume... the motor works...

Taking the car over to TRE Motorsports in NH soon, so will see if I can get them to fix...

Not yet--I tried jamming a screwdriver to try to move the gear over, but will see if TRE can fix it... don't want to crack gears. When they fix will post on how it's done... the two plastic white gears are located in the front of the seat area-- visible w/o removing seat... I see em spin when I push the button, so they are just not connected and not driving the seat back and forth-- pretty sure that is problem...

Check the flex cable running from the left and right side of the motor to each respective side may have pulled out, I'll bet on it, Johnny O

Yep, JohnnyO- that's exactly what the problem was.... the left side was out...

All I did to fix it was

1) look under the front part of the seat, locate the thick rubber 6" hoses that insert into the middle box,
2) pull out one side, (the box where the two nickel sized white plastic gears insert is easiest),
3) follow it back to the left side rail where the other end inserts.. the left side is probably the most common that comes out---

I didn't have to remove the seat at all.. just use a flashlight and when you remove the rubber sheathing, there is a wound wire inside with square ends on either side.. when you push the buttons to move the 8 way adj. seat, the motor spins the wire inside the protective sheathing attached to gears that move the seat...

The square ends fit into the the top box (look for hole) and on the left side of the rail, you will see a small round bracket that guides the rubber hose cover at an angle to about the other end gear which is about 8" from the front rail...

It's really simple-- I though I'd have to pull the seat and take the railing apart-- presto! Working seat again--

I give up!! Ive been in the garage for over an hour eyeballing under the seat and cant find any loose or disconnected wire. I have an '88 930. Are the seats different than a normal Carrera?
I have the Bentley book and it doesnt help any either.
Looks like Im going to have to pay up$$ at the dealer.

speccarerra, good for you, just be sure if only the one side was off the wen you reinsert the cable the the seat is square and that the left and right sides are equadistant and not cocked this will put a strain on the front and back movement, johnny o

diabolos88, Where are you located? I thought I saw you write that you were in the Phoenix area. If that is the case you could swing by my house the saturday after next and we could take a look at it. There will be a few other pelicans here, we are getting our cars ready for the April 22nd track day at Firebird. Let me know and I'll send you contact info.

Diabolos,

Don't think seats are that different... I wonder if there is a front cover over the two cables and middle gear box???

I pulled some pics from a LA based porsche salvage shop- see the tan seat on the left-- it has the two black hoses that house the wire cables running into the middle box with the plastic gears... they may look seated, but I removed one by one, the rubber housing, reinserted them and tested to see if it turned...

Another 8 way adj. seat on the left.. the black one with the box of rubber gloves on it... can clearly see the black hoses going into the middle gear box...

Im in Chandler for couple months on my job, originally from Brasil. Let me know your info, gtsacr71@gmail.com and Ill bring the beer

Spec,

I see the box upfront, that box on mine has aplastic cover that was keeping it hidden. But I still cant get in there cuz the seat stopped moving right where it keeps me from getting in near the footwell area, Im an ex bodybuilder, 265lb / 6'3" so its a tiny tight spot to get into right now. If only I could manually move the seat back a little, but Im afraid of breaking the teeth or the gears on the seats. Can someone help me out here, preferably someone locally who would be able to squeeze in there? It sucks driving it because my legs are up to my throat! arrgh!
