Porsche Crest Why did I wait so long?? (Wheel painting)

When I bought my SC in 2003, the wheels were looking a little shabby. I think the PO ran it through the automatic car wash. I kept saying I was going to send the wheels out and get them done professionally. Then I read a lot of threads and figured I could do it on my own, but put it off indefinetely, I guess out of fear of making them look worse.

I finally took off the skirt and did something about it. I am so pleased with the results, I'm pissed I didn't do it before.

Before:

I took the wheels off, and washed them really well. Around the lugs was a lot of gook. Dried up soaps, brake dust, and anti seize from the lugs. I ran steel wool over the black parts and used some brake cleaner on anything that was left.

I let them dry and then masked them off really well with electrical tape. Electrical tape is the key - not the blue painters tape. Electrical tape streches so you can get a nice line around the lip, especially the 6's where you can use one piece to go halfway around. I found the blue painters tape doesn't bend much.

I shot the wheels twice with Wurths Black Satin. I also painted the center caps which has turned purple from fading. Now all I need to do is replace the lugs.

After:

Painted my Fuch's with Krylon two years ago. Still looks great. Not for the squemish. I regularly smooth and paint the lug nuts. Not tough at all. Good for you.

Edit: See 2 posts down. Rustoleum not Krylon. Wil reminded me.

I always urge electrical tape for this kind of work and have posted this before...I'm glad others' experience is as good as mine on this....

Looks great.....

For yet others , try Rustoleum 7777 rattle-can black...a perfect match to Fuchs black. And *durable* ......

Wil,
You just tripped my memory cell. It was Rustoleum, not Krylon as in my previous post.
Thanks,

I have dipped my lug nuts in liquid rubber (the thing we use for rain pipes). Used Rubson but not sure you have that in US. ANyway, if you do that twice you get a really nice finish that is more or less resitant to scuffing.

Thanks for the compliments!

I used one can of paint for all 4 wheels. 2 coats. Wil, I know I found the tip on electrical tape on PP. If it was your post, thank you. If not, thank you whoever

Great timing Guys,

I have been wanting to refresh my Fuchs for a long time--they are more purple than black. This morning after reading this thread I went to Home Depot and got the paint and tape. Two down and two to go--they look so much better. I figure I have three more hours to go including dinner so I will post before and after shots later this evening when I finish.
