1976 911s modifications?

I am looking at a 1976 911s. I was wondering if this is an engine that can be easily modified without having to fabricate too many parts. I am thinking about turbo chargers, throttle body, exhaust and chips. Is it wise to put an aftermarket turbocharger on this engine?

The best advice I can give is spend a few bucks on Bruce Andersons book "Porsche 911
Performance Handbook".
Read it cover to cover amd come back with more specific questions. A guy has got to start his education somewhere and that is
the best place I have found.

Years agon, a company in California had an aftermarket turbo system to install on 2.7s. It made for a very fast car that didn't last long. There is a supercharger system that seems to work well that is still available. BUT if you start with a high mileage motor and build it up, you will end up with juck in short order! The 2.7 has a strong tendency to pull head studs and leak oil , A LOT of it! This same head stud pulling will also leak compression- sounds like an exhaust leak. This is not a good thing.
Wanna go faster? Save up for a 3.2 or 3.6 motor and convert your car. You'll spend between $7500 to $12,000 on the conversion and have a nice reliable and fast car

I have a 1976 911S. It is not a good idea to install a supercharger in my opinion. There are some modifications that will help the power though. First, the emission laws in the US changed in 1976. This led Porsche to change the exhuast system. The exhuast system has a smog blower and both headers feed into one inlet in the muffler. Remove the smog blower, and change the headers and mufflers to a 1974 style (two inlet muffler). As you change the muffler install a sport performance muffler. The second item that limits the 2.7L is the the CIS fuel injection. With the CIS system you are unable to install more aggersive cams because the overlap between the intake and exhuast valves will mess up the fuel injection system. At a high cost you can change the CIS to webers and then install new cams. The stock 1976 911S 2.7L engine is around 165 HP. With the muffler upgrade you can probably get to around 180-190HP. If you change the CIS to webers and install new cams the max you will get from a 2.7L is 210HP. The CIS is very reliable, but necessary performance oriented. Pick up a copy of the Bruce Anderson 911 performance Handbook. It goes into great detail as to what may be done to modify a 2.7L engine. Good luck.
