question on replacing ignition wires
Hi,
I bought some Magnecor ignition wires to replace the original ignition wires in a 1987 911 3.2. Replacing the wires on the driver side was pretty easy. The only difficulty I encountered was the Magnecor wires are thicker than the original wires, so I decided not to use the fasteners that hold the wire in place, but did use clips to guide the wires to their correct locations (any need to keep the wires attached to the fasteners on the engine?). The passenger side proved to be a bit more difficult. I thought the wires could simply be threaded under the AC compressor, but the #5 wire appears to be fastened beneath the compressor. Should I be able to detach the wires easily by simply unbolting the compressor and moving it aside slightly? Thanks for your help... |
Welcome to the forum !!
I am not sure I understand the question. You can not remove the original wires stuck behind /beneath the compressor ? Or you can not make room for the new wire ? In any case its easy to loosen the three bolts on the compressor and tilt it a bit to make room. |
Hi Markus
Thanks for the reply. The problem I encountered is that I could not remove the original wires because it seems like the wire going to the number 5 cylinder is fastened to a point underneath the compressor. |
Pull aside the compressor. Three bolts on top. You may need to disconnect wire harness on the right side of compressor. Donīt disconnect the hoses ! Then just lift up compressor and put aside on top of engine. Now you should be able to get a better look at whats going on with the wire.

it is fastened under there or just stuck under there? Just stuck I think.

Can I ask you a question kwm,
how stuck? How much effort you have to put in to remove the other wire? I tried by hands but could remove any of them, even at the distributor end. I had to use a big plier to pull it off. THen I affraid I'll break somethings again, therefore I put it back. Job incomplete. |
Well, the wires were in a harness that was attached to the engine. Removing the AC compressor and the mounting plate allowed me to detach the harness and remove the old wires. Someone with small hands might be able to get a 10 mm wrench under the compressor and detach the harness without removing these items first, but it would be tough!
