Auto antenna length

I just replaced my auto radio antenna with one I picked up off the for- sale forum. I now have to watch out as I drive along. My old one would only extend a couple of sections but this one can take birds down.. How long should the mast be on the 84 carrera's? Could be I'm just used to a shorty. (ok no comments please)

I think they're supposed to be about 34 to 36 inches or so. Mine's 39 inches but no one seems to notice.
