MFI Thermo still stuck
2.2T uprated to S spec on MFI. Just acquired this car. Car is running too rich and I suspect the thermostat. Have read up on the MFI on this board including the "MFI thermostat R and R" on the tech info page.
Before removing the thermo unit I warmed the car up and checked the push rod under the triangular cover. The rod looked as if it was fully forward and I could push it into the housing which would allow the lever arm to swing back. According to the R and R article that would mean that when released the rod was fully forward i.e. full rich. So removed the unit as per the article managed to remove it without loosing the bits over the floor, cleaned everything up in the parts washer. Also rubbed the bore with very fine wet and dry abrasive paper. Checked the pairs of expanding washers, counted 25 like it says, and popped it all back together with a bit of oil to help it on its way. Took it out for a run. 10 miles in hot weather. Got back whipped the triangular plate off. Pushrod still fully forward i.e. fully extended. Doooohhh. Time to consult the Pelican!!! First point of order. I am reading this right aren't I ? Fully rich is pushrod fully forward i.e. towards the front of the car, i.e. fully extended. Assuming my orientation is correct where should I go from here ![]() ![]() ![]() BTW the air supply is unblocked with no splits in the run to the heat exchanger. Should I get a blast of hot air from this with the motor running? Think I'll check for that but otherwise I'm stumped!! Thanks in anticipation.................

Thermostat heats up
Rod EXTENDS, pushing FORWARD toward FRONT of Car Yes, there should be a stream of hot air coming from the double paper tubes. The air should flow around the discs and cleanly exit the tube on the bottom of the thermostat. Are you sure you have the orientation of the washers correct? Some photos of what you have now would be a help for diagnosis.

Thanks for that John!! As I suspected I was looking at it the wrong way. Checked that I was getting plenty of warm air from the warm air hose and drove the car again. Can confirm that the rod is fully forward and the CO is about 6-7% at idle so cleaning it would appear to have done the trick. A tad rich but good enough to get me around until I pop it on the rolling road.
