Front shift lever coupler stuck.
Replacing the bushings. No problem with ball cup bushing. In order to slide the shift rod bushing off of the rod the coupler (for the ball cup bushing) has to come off. By loosen the coupling between the rear seats I managed to get a better angle and remove the coned set screw (up front) but the coupler under the lever still won´t slide off the rod. I opted for a bit of violence but its hard since there is no leverage with the rod loose in the back and no god grip or space.
What am I doing wrong ?? |
There is a set screw holding the cup onto the rod. Twist it to the right and you will see it.
|
Yes Wayne, the set screw is removed. Problem is the coupler will still not move. I think maybe I´ll pass on the rod bushing since it looks good anyway.
I will need the time on the coupling since stupid me did not mark the alignment before I removed it. |
Markus,
i had the same trouble getting the rod end removed as well. I had a buddy hold the coupler end and used a piece of wood held against the end and hit it with a sledge. It came right off. In this case, the rod bushing came apart in my hands so it HAD to be replaced. If yours is in decent shape, leave it alone. For the coupler adjustment, use the factory method of 101 Projects. Both will work well and get you close. Fine tuning it from there is pretty easy. |
Thanks Wayne, I finally managed in a non children proof language.
Now for the coupling. Yes, I have read numerous threads and I have both 101 and Bentley´s so I´ll start from there. I am mentally prepared for a trench war in the back seat..;) |
Good luck.
BTW-What time is it in Sweden? |
Markus, what are you doing... I thought you were going to hold off on that project so that i could do it for you whilst you adjusted my valves :D
We must fix a weekend soon ;) |
Wayne,
'All times on this board show GMT - add one more hour for Sweden. I usually subtract 5-8 hours for US. Is that more or less correct ? I got lucky (I hope) with the coupling. There was a slight streak of dust marking where the rod were attached to the coupling. Simply measured that distance on the new one on bolted it up. It seems to engage all the gears, although fourth gear seems somewhat more balky than before. Funny thing, while going threw the gears I did not meet any resistance from the clutch (standstill engine turned of) !?! Previously it was much more difficult to engage the gears without disengage the clutch (pedal down). Why can that be ? Should I regard it as an improved alignment ? Sorry Pål, if I had the time (and your trust ;) ) I would not mind doing your valves. The actual adjusting was actually fun. Yes, lets find time to meet up! |
Would be good to have someone who has at least done it once to assist me when I do my valves, just to help with the "feel factor"...
How does September look for you? |
September is doable. Definitely!

Cool, let's email :)
