Parts ID

Christmas came early. Just bought my first Porsche since 1976,this one a 71 911 T Targa. Been sitting for 5 years, and has a nasty oil leak when filled, run, then left to sit. I suspect return tubes.
Main problem is Engine Identification. Previous owner bought the unit from a used car dealer, drove it 1500 miles, then there she sat. I suspect because of the oil hemmorage. Decal on the fan shorud indicates it's a 1974, however number stamped on engine block is 6144144. Nothing else.
Any ideas what this engine might be, or where I might find out?
Also, it came sans battery. I purchased one from Sears which comes close to fitting. However, red cable goes to chasis, black off to the starter. I'm going to sounf like a wuss, but I never did anything to my first Porsche (a 75 914) except put gas into it. Is the 711 911 a positive ground system? Fortunately, I've been clever enough not to hook up the battery.

I'm looking for some frienfly advice.

The third digit is the year of manufacturer, so the number makes it a 74. Check the engine number which should be something like 911/97 and is located on the horizontal surface just behind the serial number. If it is not 911/97, post it and someone will look it up. If it is in fact a 74, it's probably a 2.7.

Just a bit of advice before you get too much farther. Buy a Haynes Manual and a copy of Bruce Andersons "Porsche 911 Performace Handbook".

You should be able to see where the oil is leaking from. Return tubes do leak, but not lots at a time. Pay close attention to the head studs where they are mounted to the case as the 2.7 had a bit of trouble with them pulling out.

The ground is negative. The black line with a couple of smaller wires is your positive. The negative should be connected to the chassis just over the battery box. If you bought a side terminal battery, it will just fit in the box, but very tight.

Good luck with your new purchase.
