Throttle pedal stuck!!!!!!!

Had a bad night. I was showing off for friend when the throttle pedal stuck at about 5800 RPM. The engine bounced off the rev 3 times before I could shut it down. . The motor is now making alot of valve noise and is not reving as crisply. Broken rocker arm? Do I have to tear it down to check it out?

I'll let the experts give you a diagnosis, but I think the best thing to do when this happens is brake hard to bring the rpm's down and then kill it with the key. Just a thought.

Replace the throttle rod bushings next to the accelerator, the linkage tips over and catches on the tunnel.

What's your redline? My '85 is at 6250. So if you were at 5800 you weren't even at redline. That's ok. But you bounced it off the rev limiter 3 times which isn't good but at least it worked. The whole point of the limiter is to prevent damage. So it doesn't sound like to me that your damage was a direct result of this incident.

Are you sure you weren't having problems before? Sometimes when something like this happens we start listening closer and hear things that were there all along and now think we have a problem.

+1 about replacing bushings and/or rebuilding pedal cluster.
The reason it doesn't feel as crispy could be related to the bad bushings. So I would replace those first and see how the engine revs.

I don't know if your car has cruise control but that is what stuck my throttle open a couple times before I figured out what it was.

I ended up cutting the cable to it since the thing never worked from day one.

Problem 1 - Replace your pedal bushings. The throttle pedal probably got stuck on the clutch linkage just inside the tunnel. The bushings are plastic, get brittle and break. This happened to me going to turn 6 at Road Atlanta. I rebuilt the entire pedal cluster with brass bushings.

Problem 2 - On my '78 SC, I am told that the mechanical rev limiter resides in the ingnition distributer. I have also been told on more than one occasion that the distributer can be damaged if the rev limiter is activated too many times. I suspect you may have a problem with the distributer and it may be simple to fix. I would not suspect engine damage.

drain your oil & look for metal, replace your oil filter, cut it apart, then look for metal chunks between the folds of the paper.
anything bigger than a fingernail clipping probably indicates time for immediate rebuild.

me too. scared the bejeezus out of me. i would just need to bump the CC stalk and it would rev to the moon. i also disconnected it and zip tied the cable to the side. the entire thing is coming out soon.

i think overrev damage is bent valves. good luck friend.

Mine did that too going into the hairpin at sebring at about 120mph

It caused a little bit of a pucker factor...

I need to drop my engine to replace the shift rod, so I'm planning to remove the valve covers and check out the rockers. I have read quite a few times on this site of missed shifts causing broken rockers or bent valves. I suppose a leakdown test is in order.

Any other suggestions as to troubleshooting this issue?

My car did this. It was the result of a backed off throtttle stop under the pedal which allowed the throttle arm to move to the point that only the thottle linkage was acting as the stop. The throttle arm eventually deflected to the right and underneath the tunnel, sticking the throttle wide open. I was bouncing my car off of the 7500 RPM limiter whe it happened, but I had no prblems afterward. I got lucky!

Make sure your throttle pedal stop is properly adjusted when troubleshooting. As far as the engine issues go, good luck!

It's almost impossible to break the 911 engine while upshifting, or simply hitting the throttle. However, if you miss a downshift and let out the clutch, cause the rear wheels to break traction, etc. then there is almost no limit to the damage that you can do to the 911.

Ill second this theory- In fact this happened to me today and luckily the engine was stumbling so I had enough time to hit the key before it over-revved. Ive got a sticky needle and seat in one of the carbs. I had to push my car out of the intersection accross 3 lanes of traffic to get to the side where I pulled the carpet and toe board out and got the bellcrank un-snagged. then I was back on my way...... Lucky
