Will a privateer make mince meat of a factory GT3R in a properly spec'd Cayman due to its mid engine design? I guess time will tell.

All it will take is some suspension and body work with a gt3rs engine and should see it smok'n some f430gt's.

Here's one that you might see. A fella from Canada is testing the waters in PCA club races this year with this Cayman. It was very quick, but not yet reliable. He said that he is getting absolutely no help from PCNA with advice or setup help...too bad that Porsche takes no interest in racing anything but the 911.

What is up with that exhaust?

I guess I can understand the politics of Porsche. They can't abandon their flagship. I can definately see the Cayman dominating GT3 if setup correctly.

Exhaust is trying to keep from violating noise restrictions.

Something I think has no place on the racetrack, but don't get me started!

Why? What engine is it running on?

Sweet - But are the NACA ducts on the rear glass backwards?

It looks like the intention is that they extract air from the cockpit, in which case they may be OK or not. I agree, something doesn't look right with them unless their intention was to create some vortices -- which may be more clever then we're giving them credit for.

Either way, I love the car!

I think there is a surgical procedure that can fix that exhaust!

I'm not sure it was the engine, just sorting problems I think.

LOL, Lime Rock is renown for noise control issues. This is one of the most common fixes...aim the exhaust away from the metering device  , some of the solutions can be quite convoluted.

The ironic thing is that when they set the sound equipment up on the infield, everyone aims their exhaust towards the outfield -- and the church and houses that prompted the sound restrictions in the first place. Go figure!

Is this maybe for the heat problem because of the mid engine position? I can't think why they'd want to "extract" cockpit air...

rfuerst911sc 07-14-2006 03:13 PM

That is a sweet looking Cayman and would love to see them race.

I know with the 911s holes are opened in the rear glass to reduce lift. Wind comes in through the doors and push up against the rear glass. But this car has it's doors almost sealed???

Jim Garfield 07-14-2006 05:02 PM

I was very impressed with the job that they did fitting the roll cage into a very tight space.

Give this time. I think Porsche has to be convinced from third party racing efforts to begin to make that move.

Maybe they will start with pricing the Cayman RS above the base 911 but not as much as the GT3.

Porsche cares about the 911 heritage, but not so much that they wound't be satisfied with selling the Caymen instead as long as they could make it the cash cow the 911 was and is.

Remember the last time Porsche tried to replace the 911 with the 928 through marketing and will. That was just a boneheaded move, considering the cars were so different.

Don't flame me, but the Cayman could truely be a legitimate 911 replacement. If so, it will be the consumer, not the company that will really be making that decision.
