Cutch pedal suddenly dropped

A friend's '95 911 Cab had the following happen:
Drove to work, clutch normal with fairly high engagement point. Drove home and the clutch engagement was just off the floor, but enough for conventional shifting. The extremely low engagement point did not change on the drive home.
What has happened? It does not seem to me that air is in the system as it happened suddenly and while the car was parked. It might be the master or slave failing. Should he check the brake/clutch fluid level as the very first thing to see if there is proper levels? I am hoping to help him with diagnosis and repair (if possible). At least to steer him to a tech with a good idea of what to look at.
Thanks,
C

I'm asking the owner, but I think the clutch pedal travvels normally. It is just the clutch point that had now gone from high to very low.

On a cable clutch, a low engagement would be a good thing. That would mean the cable hasen't stretched and the clover plate "fingers" haven't gotten soft.
A suddendly-falling hydraulic pedal might be the master or slave cylinder leaking pressure out, air in the lines (sucked in by bad M/S cyl seal), a pivot point failing(probably not), or ?.
Some cars are designed for a soft, spongy, high clutch. Good luck and check levels. Bleeding/changing the system might help short-term.

Happened to mine once. the adjustment locknut of the clutch fork backed off and the screw backed out. Check the clutch adjustment first.

I would guess the roll pin in the clutch pedal shaft broke

THe 95 doesn't have the roll pin, but there were issues with it's replacement component.

The weekend came and I finally drove this '95 Carerra Cab. My description before was not correct. In fact, the clutch point is still high, but the clutch pedal itself, once depressed, only returns about half way. The car can be driven and the clutch works fine, just the return travel which should be about 10" is about 5". As I was taking up the pedal cluster floor cover, I pulled up on the clutch pedal. The pedal moved to the proper position, stayed there, and seems to work fine. I am assuming the problem is in the clutch pedal pivot points (or something) and not in the hydraulics or elsewhere. Anyone have the same experience or can provide some guidance on what to do now. In other words, is this likely to happen again?
Thanks.

Wow. Thanks Eric. Looks like a fairly major job, and in that is a friend's car, I'll leave it to him as to whether he wants to try it or take it to the shop.
Thanks again. Amazing.
I wonder if there is any warrantee aspect to this.
