fuel pump check valve #$%&!

My car has difficulty starting when warm. Did some research here and decided to try replacing the check valve first. Issue is I can't find a way to disconnect it. Electric posts on the pump do a great job of blocking access with a wrench. Had the bright idea of just unscrewing the pump from the valve but the posts are in the way again. The one time I had a bite on the valve I couldn't turn that 19mm bolt at all. Any ideas appreciated.

Ummm, isn't the check valve inside the pump?

Apparently it is on some. Not on mine.

Were you holding the other side of the banjo fitting with your wrench? It should be a rather simple operation. The worst part should be trying not to lose the fuel, and have it spill all over. Try getting a fuel-line clamp on the supply hose before cracking the fitting loose. Hope this helps.

I know what you mean.

I sacrificed a wrench: ground it down on the outside so I could turn the screw a bit. That set up is real pain.

Good luck!

Brute force eventually won out over ingenuity. Grabbed the banjo fitting with big friggin' channel locks and turned the 19mm nut with the longest wrench I could find. Thought I was going to break something but it all worked out.

Have you already replaced the fuel accumulator and filter? If not you might try that first. Replacing the accumulator fixed the same problem for me and it was quick and simple.

Todd,

did changing out the check valve solve your hot start problem?

Doug
