"post buy" inspection !!!!

1.some suface rust on the fenders and the cowl, I knew that was there.
2.rusted out front pan( I forgot to look there), kinda sucks but is fixable.
3. Oil leaks, 1 return tube, oil therm gasket, and a couple other small ones.
4.Did leak down test, cylinders 2-6 five to eight percent. cylinder 1, 65 %( this sucks the worst). He thinks its a broken ring...
5. Carbs, need I say more?

Well, thats the extent of the bad news. I expected worst for only paying 5500 bucks.
Im getting the carbs and the oil leaks fixed this week. Does anyone know where I can find a new (new) front pan replacement? As far as the ring prob, it will have to wait till next year, hehehehe.Well, it could have been worse, only about 500-600 bucks out-a-pocket so far, the ring and rust may be a different story.

Sorry to hear. I ran into the same thing when I bought a "rust free" tub from a guy in Toronto, front pan was toast.

I suggest before doing much more, do a very critical evaluation for rust everywhere else, especially around and below the rear torsion bar mounts, rockers (inner) and pan. In my case, I replaced the front pan, but it is not an easy job. I'm sure Tom and Wayne can get you what you need if you decide to proceed (about $250 for pan and gas tank support).

Good luck....Tim

If you haven't done the oil change and valve adjustment yet, pay particular attention to the valve gaps on cylinder 1, when you get to it. If the car sat up for any length of time, before you bought it, carbon build-up on the valves of cyl. 1 may have softened and come loose, getting 'squashed' on the seat, raising the valve off the seat a few thousanths. A check would show a much 'looser' gap than all of the other good cylinders, if the problem is valve related. Was there measurable compression on cyl. 1?

From what Ive heard leakdown tests are not a very reliable test for 911 motors according to Bruce anderson. You may have a piece of carbon stuck in a valve seat causing the problem you can try running some Techron thru the fuel system to clean out carbon in your motor.Id rely more on a compression test

I'm just doing the suspension pan on a '73 911. For 2 years there was no evidence of rust there...then boom! Anyway, I saw a suspension pan and tank support for $100 on ebay selling soon... worth a try. By the way, make sure to have the two small stiffeners welded in on top of the suspension points. They're critcal for a long lasting repair and additional strength. -Goodd Luck!
