Elephant Racing Oil Cooler Fan
Has anyone installed the Elephant Racing oil cooler fan kit? Iwas under the impression that it would fit an '86 Carrera without modification. The fan is 8" dia X 2 1/4" deep. But there doesn't seem to be enough clearance.
Mounted at the top of the cooler, it hits the headlight bucket & towards the bottom it doesn't quite clear the horn mounting bracket. Anyone have any advice????

You need to mount it at the bottom of the cooler, you will need to relocate the horns.

Thanks Chuck, that's what it looked like, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something obvious. Is there a bracket available? Or do I need to fab one?

Do I replace this:
with this? It looks like that would attach to the bolt on the bottom of the headlight bucket, but is that sturdy enough to hold the horns without any other support?

I'm just fitting a spal fan at the moment(sorry chuck) and I really want to fit it at the top of the cooler so it doesnt interfere with the air flow from between the bumper and valance.
I have already moved the horns to the other side, if you dont want to do this I have also read you can use 944 or 924 horns instead which are a lot shorter. The options for fitting the fan at the top are as follows - anyone had any experience of doing these: Dent the back of the headlight bowl so the fan can slide up past it - a little scary but seems to be the best option. Trim the back of the fan so it can sit closer to the headlight bowl - not much to trim before you hit the fan backing plate. Tip the top of the cooler towards the wheel to give more clearence behind it - not too easy with the short pipes and also wheel clearence. Perhaps I will end up doing a bit of all 3 options - anyone have any ideas?

I recently tried to install the elephant racind fan and found the fan to be 'pull' type.. Shouldn't the fan be 'push' type?
I also found inadequate space to install the fan. Simply removing the horn & bracket seemed like that wouldn't be enough clearance. The bracket that mounts to the bottom of the headlight bucket seems to be in the way, and yet that's a structural brace... Any suggestions? Thanks, Ken

I installed one of the Elephant Racing fan on my '85.
You must use the upper mount from a '87-89 in order to situated the cooler for clearance as well as the horn relocation bracket. Ypu will have to remove the existing bracket and drill a new hole for the new style bracket, here's where having small hands helps. Check out the Pelican tech article on installing a Carrera cooler, the procedure is the same. If your fan is pushing out the front of the car just reverse the wires and it will rotate the opposite way making it pull air in from the outside of the bumper.
