911s rear seal
Hi All -
The 914 forum has been nothing short of a tremendous help in restoring my car, I'm hoping the 911 guys can help me with my latest purchase. I recently purchased a 1972 911T that was converted by the dealer to "S" specs for the previous (and original) owner. It looks and runs so great that I plan on entering out local pca concours this spring. It has only one flaw. The seal around the lower front pully is leaking quite a bit. How difficult is this to replace? I am very familiar with 914 mechanicals, but this will be my first time working on a six. Thanks! Scott S |

The problem you are having is the #8 main bearing o-ring leaking. To repair this properly the cases have to be split. Now, heres the trick! Lower the rear of the engine with a floor jack. / Remove the engine mount and crank pully. / Clean the area around the main bearing with acitone. / You must use an oil resistant sealer for this part. ( NOT SILICONE! ) Apply sealer around the main bearing where it meets the case. / Replace the crank seal. / reassemble and allow the sealer to dry for 12-24 hours.

Be sure to replace the intermediate shaft cover gasket while you are in there.
These are both easy to replace, but take some time to get to. Maybe a half day job. You need to remove the muffler, rear sheet metal, engine crossbar mount, AC and bracket,etc. to get to the engine mount that is bolted to the engine. You know, the one that prevents you from getting to the seal. Nothing difficult, you just need to keep removing things until you can get to the seal. When you order the seal, BE SURE to also order the gasket for the intermediate shaft cover. This is a small aluminum cover located about 3 inches under the seal (you can't miss it). Can someone tell me about this procedure in a bit more detail?
Once you've; a) Jacked up car b) Removed the muffler c) Done a partial engine drop How difficult is it to; a) remove the existing seal b) Put in the new seal - just push it in with a screwdriver or something? I read somewhere about using a extra large washer and a bolt (what size?) to push the new seal in. Any advice appreciated! Thanks, - roGER |
