Question Kelly-Moss in Madison, WI

Hi All,

After having performed an exhaustive search on Pelican, I can only find minimal information regarding Kelly-Moss Motorsports in Madison, Wisconsin.

Does anybody on the board know anything about them, good, bad, or indifferent?

Any input is appreciated,

Dan

Good, but pricey (but most are). They have a website.

They show up for our club race at BIR in MN every year. They appear to be the real deal (serious equipment). My first instructor ran a GT1 class 911 at BIR and holds the P1 track record there with, I believe, a Kelly-Moss engine.

I've seen several Kelly-Moss prepped race cars for sale in Panorama as well.

Hi Dan, are you looking at them for servicing your car? If so, PM me and I can tell you more details. Nothing bad, just don't feel like taking the time now to go into depth.

I took a tour of their place and they were very knowledgeable. They also came across as a great group of individuals. The cars they on hand that day were awesome. Besides their normal race cars and had just finished putting a 996 engine in a Boxster and a 928 engine in a 944 or 924. I can't remember which. They also had a Ferrari on the lift. By the look of the place their is nothing they couldn't handle. If I lived closer I would use them but I have used Mraz for the past 10 years.

I have not had my car serviced by them but I have bought some parts. Really good to work with & they were QUICK to get the parts out.

I'm about five miles away so unfortunately I spend too much time over there. David and Jeff Stone own the joint. Street and Track depts. Lots of custom fab work in Track. 10-15 pcars there at all times. They don't do restoration they do performance.....

The guy who sold me my car did so to make room for a yellow 968Turbo built by Kelly-Moss - you might have seen it in Excellence. The craftmanship is astounding, the engine is phenominal, and the whole car just blows my mind.

That's all I know about KM.

Hey, thanks everybody. The reason I'm asking is I am planning to do something to my 2.7 in the future so I'm looking for options. I hear about all the great shops the West Coast guys have access to, so I'm wondering about what I have available here in the midwest. This will be a performance job, no resto here.

Souk - I've seen their website, and as the joke around here goes, it's a really nice one!! Hmmm, I wonder...if I bought that ITB/Megasquirt kit from Motomotions, would they install it for me?

mb911 - I'll Google MRAZ for more info on them, thanks for the tip.

Slant930 - I will send you that pm, thanks.

I guess I'll have to give them a call and talk. It might just be a nice Saturday road trip some day.

Dan

Thier website hasn't been updated in 3 years or so. I called them about some parts that I saw on the site and they didn't know what I was talking about. Don't depend on the site for anything more than contact information.

I'll also look into Fabson, Jim. thanks.

If anybody else has recommendations for P-car shops in WI, please post them here. It might be a good reference thread for other WI Porsche owners.

Ben, I agree. I really don't see many other p-car owners in La Crosse. I pulled up along side a guy in a brown targa turbo with a dealer plate on it last week, but I couldn't seem to get his attention (it must be easy to miss a white Turbo-look coupe). He must not have been a Pelican.

Dan,

Kelly-Moss did the PPI on my '87 Carrera in June. They were the only shop in I called that would do a leak down test. Neither Dunns or Zimbrick would. They spent a lot of time explaining just what condition my car was in and what expenses I can expect down the road. I have ordered a few parts through them because they are cheaper than the dealer and can get most items the next day. I plan to use them for service on my car unless someone tells me about a better shop in the Madison area.

Oh fine- I'll make my 912th post this one-undoing my floating 911 post. Lasted about 12 hours. A worthy cause, however, because now that you ask; I'll second Fabson. A lot of PCA types use them including the local chapter prez if I'm not mistaken. I had a pleasant experience with them last week. Don't expect a lot of glitz or salesmanship-just low-key demeanor and excellent work. I also found them to be reasonably priced as they worked their a$$es off on my car in the heat for way more hours than it should have taken, and still cut me a break. As far as experience, they have race cars all over the place. From 356s, 924s, 944s, 911s, 930s to full on, I don't know what the heck they are other than expensive, race cars. As I understand it, they also race. They also have a line of race trailers out front belonging, I presume, to customers, and maybe some themselves. Did I mention they know about racing.

I strongly recommend you use them because it would be great to have another 2.7 guy break trail for me. I did talk to them last week about this very topic and Dean felt I could approach 200hp w/o major work, but even that won't be cheap. His prescription starts with Ssis and goes from there.

On 2.7 HP- This is certainly another thread but I'm starting to think Bitz EFI and Turbo. I'm researching now for a winter project. I would like to see 250 HP w/o a motor swap.

On Wisconsinites you don't know- Wisconsin has cities spread out all over it, but they're relatively small and immediately surrounded by rural area. Not a lot of Porsches outside of Milwaukee and Madison I'll wager. Hell-not a lot of Porsches in those cities either, relatively speaking. Go to Denver and they're everywhere. You're in LaCrosse. I'm by Port Washington. Ben is way South. We aren't likely to bump into each other unless it's at a DE or event. As you can see, there are others here, and I've probably waved at a few of them on the highways and byways, but I've only met one other Pelican and he lives 4 miles from me. I couldn't believe another guy lives so close to me in the sticks!

On Kelly-Moss-They always have a race car or two advertised in the Panorama for sale-big ad with picture. They look great and the prices didn't seem way out of line.

Thanks for the input RBS. You must be in the Madison area I assume.

Sebring, I'll give Fabson a call too when I'm getting serious. Ya know, I've really been wondering what a 2.7 would put out with ITB's and EFI like Tec-3 or the Motomotions kit with Megasquirt. If a 2.7 RS engine setup puts out about 210hp with carbs, shouldn't it be higher still with ITB's & EFI due to the greater efficiency of the EFI? Plus with the ease of twin plugging using EFI, there should be lots of room for CR increase.

I want to stay NA, though. But I sure like the idea of a turbo 2.7. Sounds like a neat motor.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Mahle makes a nice 2.9L MFI piston/cylinder set that doesn't require boring the case spigots. It's about 9.6:1 if I remember right......surely better than the stock 8.5:1 RS set.

Add carbs/ITBs......twin plug it and you'd probably be in the 230-240 hp range I would think.

Thanks,
Aaron Hatz
