Very unhappy with tire choices

It would appear that finding high performance tires to fit the 9 inch rears on my car has become very difficult. I am a diehard Michelin guy, but they have apparently stopped making any of the Pilot high performance tires in that size other than the Cup DOT racing tires. The only top level tire I can find on Tire Rack is the Yokohama AVS, which i know nothing about. I don't know if Conti makes any because i REFUSE to buy their tires. The ones that I and my family have had foisted upon us by car makers have been absolute shiite..lol Can't find any Pirellis either. As such, i am at the end of my normal shopping list. Any suggestions?

What sizes? As Dantilla suggest I would go with the S-03's if they make the size you are looking for. They kick a$$ compared to the Michelin's.

Well, you don't mention exactly what you'll be doing with the car (mostly street, some track -- some street, lots of track -- all street, no track....), but there are quite a few choices available. I have 17/9's on my rear, and I've had good luck with Toyo T1-R's (mostly street, some track) and Toyo RA1's (some street, lots of track). The aforementioned S-03 is also a fine tire. I assume you're looking for something in the 245-255 width?

Go back to www.tirerack.com and do some more looking around, then search on this board for reactions and reviews. Hang in there, you'll find something.

you can find 20 or 30 different tires for the front end. It is the rears that are the problem. Ihave noticed this with older Porsches too. It seems that Yokohama has become the falback position. The only Bridgestones worth mentioning that they have in that rear size are the RE750's Apparently the Michelin drought is recent because Tirerack had MXX3'slistedin their print ad last month and Wheel Enhancement had Pilot Sports still listed on their site, but they e-mailled me and said that they are no more!!!!

I'm happy with the AVS Sports I have - also - what about Sumitomo?, Avon MT's? Yoko ES100's?

What you planning with that TL?

Unfortunately, it looks like I am planning to have to spend $2500-3000 on some Ruf, Fiske or custom Fuchs/BBS 17's a lot sooner than I anticipated........lol Looks like AVS's for now. Where did you buy yours, Jeremy?

Rebel Racing makes them too. Problem with Lindsey is that they are so busy that they don't have time to find the cores. so if you want wheels soon, you have to find 4 6 x16 fronts. My all time favorite aftermarket wheels are the Ruf Classic 17's, but they run $3k new...........not to mention the fact that if you do the wheels, you MUST do the Yellowbird front and read bumper swap....slippery slope, indeed...lol The car is arriving fitted with Dunlop Sport A2's.......decidedly budget for the car......the must go!!!!! lol

I had Toyo T1S tires on my miata, and then thought I'd try the Yoko AVS ES100s when the Toyo's wore out. I was very, very disappointed in the ES100's. The grip is just not there. I went back to Toyo and the T1R (T1S replacement) and am much happier. They don't have Toyo's at the TireRack, and I haven't checked for 245 45 16, but I think they make them.

edgeracing.com carries the Toyos. That's when many of the miata guys get their tires.

I'm very happy with my AVS Sports.

Even wear, no noise, good in the wet and good in the dry.

After these I've got a unused set of Yoko AVS Intermediates in the garage to put on. After that I hope they'll have re-released the first 50 series street tire, the Pirelli P7!

I just bought some of the Yokos and am prettty happy with them as dry weather, street tires (I have not had them out in the wet yet though). I switched from old Dunlop 205/60/15 on 6 inch fuchs to 205/55/15 on 7 inch fuchs so the less sidewall flex may be part of the reason I like them.

Hankook from Edge racing. Very good tire for the money. Also, their 225 tire comes in a 45 profile as well.

The Yokohama AVS Sports tread design were originally designed for Porsche racing as a rain tire. They are great all around tires, soft enough for excellent dry traction as well as excellent wet performance. I know from first hand experience about wet weather traction, as my 911 is a year round car in Seattle.

I run 7's & 9's on my SC and just went through the same thing. The selection is pretty bad, for sure!

Tire Rack says SO-3's are discontinued and that they are selling out remaining inventory. They have no 245/45/16's.

Based on their recommendation and my research, I went with the Avon's. 500 miles is not much experience but so far, so good. FWIW, we have RE750's on our '04 Audi S4 and after 2000 miles they seem to be doing well also.

There are other places and tires in that size available. I found Goodrich KDW's (?) at Tire Kingdom and a couple of other mail order companies had Dunlop 8000's. Actually, there were a few SO-3's but the price was outrageous, like $300 each.

If you're looking for grip = BF Goodrich is the way to go.
