Quick 2 Q's! Piston Squirters and Short Stroke
1. Has anyone seen in person (or simulation ) of how much oil a piston squirter makes? Is it a spray? Is it like the same force and quantity as 'squirting a bottle of WD40'?
2. 2-3 weeks ago, I have seen a lot of 'short stroke' engine for sale. Sizes vary from 2.x to 3.x, etc. What makes an engine a short stroke? What parts make it an SS? Sorry for the dumb-q's. Thanks. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

There are pic's of the oil piston squirters that have been posted in the Engine Rebuild forum. I think they were posted by Chris Bennett.
SS refers to the stroke/bore ratio. You can make a motor of a certain displacement by using a bore and stroke that are about the same (referred to as "square"), with greater stroke than bore (undersquare), or with a greater bore than stroke (oversquare). Granted, this is no set rule for bore/stroke ratio, but for example a normal 2.8 motor uses a 70.4mm stroke crank, a 2.8 motor built with a 66mm crank would be referred to as "short stroke." Correspondingly, it would have a larger bore than the former. So, the crank and jugs, and their ratio (or size relative to a stock or more normal set up) denotes "short stroke." |
