Noise from the Rear

Recently I have been hearing a whirring sound form the rear of the car - and before someone pokes fun at me, it is not the normal engine fan noise!

Sounds like a flat tire but thats not the case - checked.

The sound goes away when I corner hard left and gets worse when I corner hard right. If I disengage the clutch and free wheel at speed the noise stays. The sound seems to be coming from rear left.

I'm thinking its rear left hub bearing starting to go but before I go to the expense of getting it fixed I was wondering if any of you experts can think of anything else to check for. I have everything crossed that its not gearbox related.

The car is a 1983 911SC with widebody guards, 17"x9" Cup 2's on rear with spacer/adaptors on the wheels - so the issue with bearing wear is known and expected - which is probably why that was my first guess.

Any alternative opinions?

Tim

I had a squeal coming from the right rear of my car. It was the wheel bearings (hat tip to Otto for the diagnosis and repair).

Jack it up and make sure its not your CV joints coming loose. Not a pcar expert, but if they come loose, they'll destroy your car.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Sounded like mine did 3 years ago, except I changed the wrong side and then thought it was something else (CV's) ! The side the noise comes from can be very deceiving, and like yours, I thought its got to be the one on the opposite side to the direction which you turn the corner. Wrong. Could be either. The rear bearings are double-row, and the noise depends upon which bearing race has worn (inner or outer), therefore when you corner it could be nearside or offside. You may be able to tell by jacking up the car and trying to detect some grinding. This worked for me, and I eventually ended up changing the other bearing (which I though was OK), which cured the noise.

I think it's most likely a bearing, but the trick is finding out which one.

Thanks for all the replies - it helps a lot.

For now I'll treat as bearing failure and replace - Wayne will be happy as I just ordered the replacement from him. Over here in Australia they are A$230rrp from Porsche, about A$110 from other suppliers or A$65 if I get it from PP. Since I am getting some other parts at the same time (including a pre-muffler) the added shipping charges are small.

As for left or right - I'll let the mechanic work that bit out.

Well DCRED might be right!

Mechanic changed the left one this afternoon as the noise was getting worse daily. The old bearing was quite loose so we were surprised to find the noise is still there after the replacement! We both were certain it was the left bearing.

CV Joints all checked out OK.

So we will go ahead and change the right when the one on order arrives from Pelican Parts.

Let us know how you get on. When I got the bearing out, I took it apart to take a look and it had some slight pitting on the inner race, didn't actually look that bad. Didn't half make some noise though at about 60mph !

I went through the same trial and error; it seemed like it was the left side because the noise went away when I threw the weight over to the right side; i.e., you'd think that taking the weight off the bad bearing would reduce the noise, but it's throwing the weight onto the bad bearing that quiets it. After changing the left side with no change to the noise, I changed the right bearing and the noise was gone.

Well - change the right bearing today and ......... the noise is gone. Just goes to show that even an experienced 'Master Technician' can get be tricked.

The old bearing had what appears to be a small dimple in one face the balls roll on. Looks like something found its way in or chipped off and got crushed. For such a small mark it made one hell of lot of noise!

In the end, I have two new bearings and can now forget about them for a while. The fronts were done by PO just before I bought the car.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
