Key Mod - swap bulb with LED
I just performed a mod to my 911 key light - replacing the bulb with an LED. The details of the mod are midway down the page on this site , which is a copy of an original Rennlist forum post. I searched for the Rennlist post to link here instead, but the pictures are not available there. Anyway, the mod works great - the LED light is much brighter than the original bulb.
I found the Radio Shack LED (p/n 276-320) was not available at any store nearby, but was able to order 20 of them off Ebay, shipped from China, for LESS than what 1 costs at Radio Shack - if I could find one. I ordered them last Friday, and the package (from China) showed up in the mailbox today! Not my picture - but one off the link- <br> http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1153503948.jpg |
PELICAN thread here
Did this several weeks ago -- WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than before. Heed the notice about reversing the LED leads and you'll be good to go. |
Can I buy one of the bulb off from you?

Did this on all of mine. Great and easy upgrade.
|
Hum, I used search and didn't find that Pelican thread.
Anyway, I'm willing to part with some of the spare LEDs - those interested, PM me with your name and address and I'll share them while they last. I'll keep a few handy for the local Atlanta Pelicans. |
I was happy to find this thread. I just tried the mod with the listed parts, short lead on top of the batteries, long to the copper tab, but it does not work. I can't figure out what I did wrong.
|
OK I just figured it out. I have an habit of buying spares, so I took the second LED that I bought, and found that for me, the polarity is reversed.
The long lead goes to positive, the short to negative. Batteries positive side up, and the short lead around the copper tab. Now that key throws enough light out to act as a back up flashlight. You can feel some heat when you shine it on your hand! |
Anybody have a couple extra LED bulbs? I switched over to the LED bulb last year...Really happy with the upgrade, but the metal leads on the bulb broke so light is dead. Did somebody order 100 from Hong Kong on ebay? and wants to share? I would be happy to send a few dollars via paypal for the trouble...
Thanks a lot! |
Hey I'll take one!
Think we can handle the long drive? SmileWavy |
Dan, I got your PM and replied. Carnutzzz, I've sent you a PM.

What an awesome mod. I gotta do this. Thanks for posting.
Mark--you got PM thanks |
Did it. My 2 local Radio Shacks were 'fresh out' of the LED's, so I finally got one elsewhere. Love the mod. Light works great.
Thanks for everyone's help, esp the pics and detailed instructions. |

I've gotten several recent PM's with requests for LEDs.
dan79brooklyn, viper4490, ajmartin - yours will be mailed tomorrow. 911 in SC, axl911 - PM me your address. These requests will leave me with just a few that I'd like to hold onto for the local folks at the PCA AX on Sunday. For those of you interested in the ebay seller I purchased these from, the sellers name is hktaiyuen and the EBAY store link is The LED description I purchased is : 20x 5000mcd 5mm White LED Ultra Bright Free Resistors. That gets you a qty of 20 LEDs, and the resistors are not used. The current price is $0.99 and $4.00 shipping. |
Thanks for the LEDs MBAtarga. I finally bought the batteries this evening and they work like a charm.
Thanks again, Mike |
now that i've gotten my basic bulb working, it's time to upgrade it looks like.

Cool. Mine works. Stopped by Radio Shack this evening and they had the LED and batteries. Easy to do. Now to put the left over small pieces in a zip lock bag and file away.

Good idea. I'll give it a try.
