rear wheel hub removal

I am installing a Big Red kit on my car and had the "brillant" idea of while-in there- check the rear bearing.

I took the 30mm nut of, but now it seems impossible to remove the hub. Am I missing something? How do I remove the hub?

I did some research and evryone seemed to worry about the big nut, which I was able to remove quiet easy...but the hub is different story.

Help...PLEASE

You need a slide hammer. If you remove the year hub, you'll destroy the bearing and have to replace it. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. :>)

Thanks Mike...the problem was that I was already half way through.

Fortunately, , I was able to take it out without breaking it. I checked the bearing and looks to be in good shape...add some grease and now I am ready to install the hub again.

Any tricks for the hub installation or just bang it until it's in. Thanks

The rear bearing is a sealed unit. What have you done? AFA as destroying it, you won't notice until you drive the car. What happens is one of two things: Either it comes apart (shouldn't) or the procedure to remove it dents the races with the ball bearings themselves. It won't go far in that condition.

But, if you must, you put the bearing back in by first freezing it. Then heat the arm. Now drive or pull the bearing in using pressure ONLY on the very perimeter of the bearing housing. Many homemade tools have been conjured up for this including a section of stout PVC pipe that matches the ID of the arm where the bearing fits. Others have found parts in the electrical isle of the Home Defect, or hardware store.

I agree.

Do not for one second consider keeping that old bearing in there.

The hard work is all done: the bearing is Cheep..

Do it right and do it once..

You removed the hub.

This will have brinnelled ( read mullered) the bearing.

Thanks guys for the help. I guess stupidity has a price!!!.

This is how the hub came out

And here is the bearing still in the trailing arm.




Now, when I reinstall the new one, should I press the bearing in the hub first?? or in the trailing arm and then install the hub?

Mario,

As you can see, one of your inner races is still connected to the hub. Hence you've pretty much ruined the existing bearing. You'll need some sort of bearing splitter to remove the race from the hub.

You essentially need to press the bearing into the hub and then use some sort of home-made puller/press to pull the hub back into the bearing without disturbing the inner races. I'm sure once you see how this comes apart, it will be somewhat obvious how it needs to go back together.

This isn't real difficult, but you need to make sure you use the appropriate amount of care to avoid damaging the trailing arm and the bearing when it goes back together.

The bearing is pressed out: the arm is warmed the bearing frozen: then it almost falls into oplace..

The hub is pulled into the bearing by the stub axle after startting with a simple screw pulling device.

it is imperative to keep the bearing compressed to avoid it falling apart..

Now, I still need to find out how to remove the bearing race from the hub. Any suggestions? Thanks

You can try freezing the hub, then quickly heating on just the race. Be ready to secure the hub in a vice w/o damaging the studs and take two large screwdrivers, on opposite sides, and pry the race off. You gotta move fast. You might have to do this a couple of times, the first time using a chisel to move the race up off the shoulder so you can get the screwdrivers well under the edge. It will come flying off, be carful and don't nick up the hub shaft if you can possibly help it.

I have removed those races multiple times by heating it cherry red and tapping it off with a chisel(carefully and evenly).
BTW have you guys priced those rear bearings lately ? They were $40 about 5 years ago. Now they are $90 to $100.00 .
