trunk metal

so i had somebody come look at my targa today
and he said that the trunk area is repaired with replacement sheetmetal

specifically the sides of the trunk, around the suspension
it was to clean according to him, not "rippled"

he said his 70 , has a rough finish , mine didn't and as such he said mine had been in an accident, and was repaired

was a good repair he said

sounds just weird to me
both sides of the car would have been repaired identically then
cause the finish on both sides is identical

i do have a rough finish in the front of the nose
where the spoiler bolts onto and the floor below that

but the sides are just smooth finish

could anyone comment on that?
i'de like to know if this guy had a point , or not
it's bad enough to have somebody pick your car apart
it's worse when you gotta reply with , eehm aaah, dunno , don't think so, whatever dude...

i so hate this selling business, want to get it over with asap

Stijn, the cars I've seen have the "schutz" applied to both sides of the floor in the trunk area around the gas tank. Up as far as the sway bar in the rear and up behind the nose, or latch panel. AFA the sides, the subframe horns got a little, but none behind the fuse panel or on top where the smugglers lid is. All clean and smooth. Sounds to me like your visitor doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Your inner fenders look correct to me as done by the factory.

Thanks Milt,
he says his 70S has the rough finish there

i felt like an idiot
i know my car ain't the concourse winner
and yes it needs work to become more decent

but that came out of the blue

such a royal drag
bought the car, spent all that time and money, more then the initial price
and from the looks of it , i can't even sell it the price i bought it
even if i mention a price way lower then i had hoped, i can't even get them to come look at the bugger... i had 30 calls, and only one came to look....

i wanted to sell it cause i get no use from a car that's parked 35 miles from my house, don't get to drive it enough, and i don't get any work done if i can only work it a day in the week, if i'm lucky

these prices just makes me wonder what the hell i've been doing for the last 3 years,i sure as well don't wanna put more money in the pit, that's for sure. thinking about parting it out... even if it doesn't pay top money that way , i still save money from garage rental, insurance, fuel to and from the garage and other stuff

Stijn:
looking over you car and seeing that it's a 73 "S"..that would make it one of the more desirable long hoods. Maybe for some the fact that it's a Targa is a negative...but not all.

You might want to consider "how" you're marketing the car, and to what kind of audience. Take heart, you'll find your way....

BTW..if the fender area at least is original, you might want to point out the textured surface along the fender lip area. If there was damage as the one guy thought there was....most shops wold likely not put the textured surface on the fender lips unless hey were really good and undestood Porsches.

desireable longhoods yeah ,but everybody here wants a bloody concourse car for 20 K...

it's got a full effect rebuild engine and mfi pump worth 15 k , with only 500 km's on it

sure it's missing the choorm S trim
sure it needs SSI's and the paint job isn't holding up to well
sure it has 16 inch fuchs instead of 15 inches
and the seats aren't original either
yes , the electrics need cleaning up

but does that mean the car is only worth 10 K

i'm no car salesman , in fact, the whole selling thing makes my stomach go in a twist , i can't lie, i'm not the person to hide things , or cover up things i know aren't perfect and it's it's depressing me to hear folks offer me 7 K, and make it sound like they're doign ME a favour for that price...
the car has cost me a cool 40 K in the last years, i realize an incomplete car is not going to get top money , but i'm not getting anything at all

it has to go , cause it's costing me to much for what i can get out of it
as i said, can't drive it , need to plan a date to the garage before i can take it for a spin, and it's not practical to work on the little tidbits that need doing if i can't access the car easely... it wasn't so much a problem the last years, since the car wasnt' drivable, and the project was in a crude phase, but now it's painfully clear that it's not working out like that... and can't afford a place in the city with suitable parking, nor can i afford a place in the country, and do the commute, fuel is to darn expensive around these parts, commute or place in the city , it's about equally expensive...

yeah the desirable longhood, is biting me in the ass
bigstyle, and it doesn't even seem to be as desirable as everybody keeps saying... either that , or mine is just the exception to the rule ... in which case , maybe i should part i out...

all the other S' owners should be happy about that prospect... another one bites the dust... and the remaining bunch goes up in price... a tiny bit...

Where you have the green circle above, yes mine is "ripple-rough" finished there. (1969 E Coupe) I Por-15 black over those also, and the ripples are visible and can be felt.

The gas/fuel tank, also has the "ripple-effect", even more so.

But mine is a 1969.

This is forward of the shock/strut mount, "textured", (between the fuse box area and the strut mount. Light textured. (Poor camera pic)

Below the gas tank area is even more textured.

I would never take a dime less for my E Coupe even though it does not have the original steering wheel for example. I'd just say something truthful that "It doesn't have the orginal steering wheel, but the engine is a green shroud E numbers, body E numbers etc.,.

I'm not sure if you're in a state of mind for an "ad critique"...but yes...you're pointing out too many faults w/o desrcibing the positives.

Things like Targas leaking will be asumed by most who know Targas. Just say tires have plenty of tread left on them and leave it at that, don't add that they're not new. People get sppoked about electrical issues so get those under control and don't list it. Say paint is a 8.5 out of 10...and leave it at that ( they'll see the scratch and assume that is why it's not a higher than 8.5 when seen).

Plus, you're jumping form positive to negative as you go down the details of the car..... also, end the ad in a high note as to what an incrediably rare and desirable car this is and with a little work how it would be just perfect for the next buyer.

Etc.....

if i leave those things out , it's misrepresentationg of the car will
especially on ebay , where potential buyers have to decide based on the ad , sure i can leave those things out, but then i'll have pissed off people when they come watch the car and bail

i'll tweak it a bit.

Stijn,
Not a restoration expert, but doesn't the yellow paint tell you something? The guys over at the early 911S Registry forum could give the photos the once over and tell you more accurately.

MHO, your year 911 should have the same trunk color as the exterior paint. Is the original color black or yellow? '69 might have been the last year (?) for black-painted trunks (despite ext. color). Did the PO paint it black for effect and stopped short or was new metal grafted on and painted black as the potential buyer theorized? There might be tell-tale signs of masking or lack thereof among the many wires and components in the trunk.

The partially painted yellow metal around the gas tank area tells me either the yellow metal or the black paint was added at some point.

If you're concerned with the original look, verify old vs new metal, then paint the trunk the way it should be. Advise the new owner what you know and let them determine whether new metal is better than old rusted metal.

Astute buyers will wonder why your battery boxes are still intact.

Sherwood

original colours, mine has seen many paint jobs
original fushia brown, to metallic mexico blue to metallic black
there were traces of brown in the trunk...
that yellow, i think that's a primer , it's also in the rear on the big support beams left and right of the engine bay so i doubt it has anything to do with grafting metal anywhere in the front

mwah ,it's been on markplaats
i think i've had enough "dutch" exposure there

for the odd dutch ebayer who hasn't seen it there, i'm sure they can read english right? if not , they can definately contact me and i'll be very helpfull , in dutch

about clowns, on marktplaats i had a dingbat bid 3 grand
when i removed his nonsense bid, he put it back up
had to disable the bidding cause all i got was clowns anyway

it's allready a depressing ordeal to have to sell it, the clowns just rub salt in an open wound....

Porsche Crest 73 Targa

If that car were on my side of the pond I would have given you $10k and run away laughing at what a steal I got. That car is not in bad shape and is in very high demand, Targa included since it is a "long hood." I have seen junk go for more on Ebay...$7k???
You should not feel ashamed to have turned him down. He was looking to steal your car.

it's not that i felt ashamed, it was more that i felt deeply offended to the point of disgust.

Nice car. Don't let the bastards wear you down - I have a 73 targa for sale also, received lots of offers to buy it on eBay for 1/10 of value....
It may take a while to sell, most buyers do not want to do any work on a car or do not have the mental ability to do so. There is a limited market on people who appreciate the early 911's and are willing to work on them, a lot of the likely buyers already have one.
Personally, if I had more storage space I would have a fleet of them.
I still have not installed my Frankfurt radio.....
I have had Porsches for over 25 years, I would not want to add up the money I spent on them, even without major rebuilds.
Photos enclosed of the inside wheel wells of my 2 - 73 targas; both are smooth surface, some slight texture below the gas tank enclosure.
