1980 3.0 - Seperating Trans from Eng probs

I am having problems seperating the Trans from the engine. Shop manual talks about installing spacers and hex screws in the three ribits in the flywheel and releasing pressure from the clutch. I have done such, but no luck. The trans is loose, but will not come free. Should the spacers be putting pressure against the flywheel? What about the throughout bearing, something about moving 90 degrees. Any veterans with suggestions? Thanks

fter the release arm was free to move it was easy to pull the eng/trans apart.Mark the position of the adjusting lever on its splines for reassembly.Hope this may be of some use to you. Guy

You're using the wrong procedure!!! The method which you describe is ONLY for the earlier cars.

On an SC, its much easier. You just need to release the tension on the arm and the helper spring on the transmission. This should be described in you manual. But, basically, you remove the circlip and take off the small adjusting arm. You then push the larger arm forward (or backwards?) to release the tension on the helper spring, which also releases the fork from the throw out bearing. I know the above is a terrible description, but fortunately there is a great description on the Pelican site somewhere (I think its either under the Engine Removal tech article, or the Clutch Replacement article). You should look these up, as you could possible do some damage by doing what you are doing. Brian |

The auxiliary spring on the clutch assembly needs to be removed so that the forks on the throw out bearing can piviot when the trans is removed. Otherwise, it keeps the trans from coming out.

Hi i rebuilt a 78SC last year. The problem i had seperating the eng/trans sounds the same as yours. The trans was moving slightly but would not pull back from the studs.I dismantled the release arm and adjusting arm from the shaft with release bearing allowing that shaft greater movment to rotate. The eng/trans came away quite easy then. The adjusting arm is held on the splines by a circlip (mark position of splines).Release lever by a roll pin.Hope this info is of some use. Guy. Don't know what happened to first reply, pressed wrong button i think!

Oustanding, I reviewed the On-Line docs on the removal of the engine, and I will remove all of the Clutch springs that I missed tonight when I get home.

After removing the clutch arm and springs, the transaxle seperated from the engine with little effort.
