first engine drop(update)
After months of debate a friend and I finally dropped the engine. Going thru to take care of some pesky oil leaks and a full tune up and valve adjustment.
Went very smooth. I'll lket you know when it is back in. Davehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1153704317.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1153704362.jpg |
Excellent work!

Can you take some quick pics of the fuel/vacuum line setup from your engine? I have a '74 and I'm trying to figure out my setup. I have a fuel distributor with two fuel line connections and that's what is confusing me. Thanks and congratulations!!
|
hope this helps
|
glad everything went welll. It's not easy with out a lift and in a small cramped garage.
|
Crash,
Haven't been on in a while. This project will be about 4-6 weeks. I'm going to plan a fall fun run when all is done. |
Thank you, I'll take a look at the fuel/vacuum lines. My throttle control pressure regulator isn't hooked to the fuel distributor and I'm trying to figure out if that is a problem. Thanks again!!
|
Your fuel distributor has three outlets and mine only has two. Your throttle control pressure regulator and CSV are both directly hooked to the fuel distributor and mine are hooked to a "tee" fitting. Your heat exchangers and engine look pretty clean.
|
pressure washed it today. Here is a pic of the tee I think you are talking abouthttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1153708352.jpg

the bottom is not connected. It is just resting on the engine tin

and cleaning
|
It is cleaning up very well. Lots of steam, degreaser, blood, and lots of sweat. Resealing cam towers, valve area, rsr rocker shaft seals, advancing timing, all common areas for seals and gaskets and full tune up. I can't wait.
Suspension refresh in the winter. I'll keep you posted. Thanks to everone on Pelican. I would never have tried this with out your help a supportive neighbor, a mechanic who likes it when I screw up, and a very supportive wife. |
Looks great! That's a lot of work!!
|
Hang in there Lusso. The end result is well worth the effort. I have the same car and did the same thing last spring and it worked out well. Took about a month more than I expected though, as usual. Good luck!
|
Dave, nice job - as soon as you're done we'll have to go out and get it dirty. Let me know if you need an extra set of thumbs, I have 10 I can spare.
|
Steven,
Post some pics if you could would love to see your results. Cory, How are you? You are always welcome. I'm taking the engine down to Wes for the cam tower work. He is advancing the timing a bit for me. It will be ready for fall fun runs through apple country. Anyone who wants to do a fun run please don't hesitate to write, call, or shout. The more the merrier. Dave |
Looks like your installing a new rear seal<flywheel> Make sure you install the right one and do it correctly or ya gona have one big PIA. Have fun , real nice car!
|
Buttjoint,
Which is the correct seal? I have a very anal mechanic who is supplying me with the seals. Thank you for any suggestions. Dave |
Dave you can count me in on a fall run, I know a few other folks who will join us. I'm doing a few things on mine as well and she's off road right now so it will be great to get together on another drive.
|
Dave I am not sure in your case, But I have seen other cases where guys doing these seal replacements used the wrong seal or installed it wrong. I meant my post as a heads-up to you so you don't have to yank the engine back out. John walker is the man. I am sure hewould be more than happy to help you. John walker is on this site often If ya can't get ahold of him. Let me know. Jim
|
John Walker was a big boost in the confidence I needed to do this. We have e-mailed back and forth quite a bit.

before and after
Spent the weekend replacing spring plate bushings. Time consuming but not as bad as I thought it would be.
Engine assembly is going well. Here is a before and a few after. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156726896.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156726935.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156726970.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156726972.jpg |
SWEET...Thanks for sharing....
|
Bet you can't get my 74 looking that good...
|
The after picture of the motor looks great.
How did you get the aluminum looking that nice? Mine seems dull and cleaning doesn't seem to help much. I'm assuming the fan was painted? I've got my engine out right now and will be starting the cleaning and detailing process next week. Thanks Brian |
Brian,
The fan is painted. It is a graphite color, I will post exact names of paint tonight when I get home. I bead blasted the fan and pully then painted then clear coat. Valve covers were soaked in cleaning solution and clear coated(high heat paint). I power washed the engine with lots of degreaser. Thanks for the nice words David |
That looks great!!
|
very nice.
Thanks Nathan |
it's in almost there
Don't mind the wrong washer on the pully. We are still going through boxes trying to locate it. If anyone has an extra let me know.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1157338404.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1157338418.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1157338462.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1157338477.jpg
