Torn Air Senor Boot?
I have a 76 911S 2.7, While doing an oil change I noticed the Air Sensor Boot was torn. How long can I go with it like this? And will it create any problem? Thanks

Assuming I understand your question, and that you are talking about the LARGE U-shaped duct from the throttle body to the 'sensor' and fuel distributor assembly ... YES, there are a couple of potential problems! First, the admission of unfiltered air and dirt, dust into the induction system ought to be an obviously potential hazard to your engines' long term health! Second, an air leak not under the control of the throttle body will probably pose quite a problem in controlling idle speed.
Until you can acquire a replacement, or maybe for quite some time, I would think you could clean the cracked area with laquer thinner, carburetor cleaner, or brake/degreaser cleaning spray, then use a patch kit for bicycle or automotive tube repairs to seal the cracked rubber out some 3/8" to 1/2" out past the crack, the larger the area, the better. If you are talking about the rubber boot that connects the air flow sensor to the throttle body, you absolutely need to remedy the problem if it is torn! If it is leaking, your car will NOT run right, period. If the leak is only small, it may run, but it won't run right. When the leak gets big enough, it won't run at all.
I think the effect of a leak would be to make the car run lean, as it would decrease the vacuum which lifts the sensor plate. (The higher the sensor plate goes, the more fuel is injected). It is such an important piece that if it were my car, I would not mess with trying to repair it. I would just get a new one. You will be sure of what you are getting, and it likely will last the life of the car. Brian |

Thanks guys for the input! I'm on my way to Akers to get the new boot. Driving to work was a nightmare. Idle wouldn't hold & it kept dying on me & not to mention the serious popping from the air leak.
