3.2 Silencer Bypass

I have a 89 3.2 with a dansk pre muffler, How much silencing do the pre mufflers provide and how loud would it be with a silencer bypass tail pipe fitted? Has anyone run this setup?

Thanks Steve

It will be very loud. I've done it. I know others that have done it, and it's too loud. It'd be like a fart can'd 911

Whats the best lighter weight option than the STD silencer to get a decent sound out of the 3.2?

Steve

Most aftermarket mufflers are too loud for my taste. I think the stock muffler with a pre-muffler is loud enough, but folks have different threshold for noise. I haven't listened to a Flowmaster in person yet, but from the sound recordings I have heard, they seem to make good noise, and should be lighter than the factory muffler. And the best part is you can get a muffler shop (don't know about the UK prices though) to fit it and weld it for less than any after market muffler out there. I think some on this board have done it for less than $150.

Search the archives here. You'll find model #, picture of the installation and sound clips.

IF you can find a borla to fit your car you may like it. I have one with the fabspeed premuffler and it has a nice throaty sound with out being to loud and no resonance.

I don't think they make mufflers for early 911's any longer but you can find them used.

I've run "The Elbow" on the end of my Fabspeed cat bypass. It sounds really loud on the low end at throttle tip-in and sounds like an old hotrod V8 when the revs build. Funny thing is, it is somewhat tolerable to drive on the highway. I didn't want to put my muffler back on after a track day and drove home with "The Elbow" It sounds smooth above 3000 rpm. Below its silly loud. Part throttle isn't bad, but when you open that throttle plate all the way, it barks bigtime.

For track driving it's a hoot and sounds pretty racy. Sounds better with a premuff like the Dansk or Fabspeed that have the expansion chamber as part of the design. The straight pipe type cat bypass pipes make "The Elbow" sound downright raucous

Forgive the lameness of the track action. We were piled up behind a Ferrari 348 that was parking it in the corners. Still a good example of what no cat, no muffler sounds like. LOUD.

I drove home from Blackhawk once with the stubby pipe. Not loud at all at speed, but when I jumped on it leaving a toll both....I thought they were going to send the troopers after me it was so loud.

That's what I have and I love it. Not too loud at all, but still different than stock and a couple of ponies too!

I did the same thing. All the rest of the guys got a big laugh out of it (I was the first to leave the toll plaza) when I let them by me to lead the way.
