Fan Bolt on '77 2.7

Can anyone tell me the size of the fan bolt on a '77 2.7. the picture in the haynes manual has a 7/8 spanner, but I thought all the bolts on the engine were metric.

thanks in advance

I believe all of the Marchal alternator shaft nuts are 22 mm, but with allowance for 'tolerances,' some 7/8" wrenches might fit! My Motorola/Marchal nut is definitely 22 mm.

Thanks Warren,
my belt broke on me and my sockets only go up to 19MM, didn't want to waste too much time getting the wrong size.

Try a standard 15/16 socket and hold tension with the fan belt while loosening or tightening.

Unfortunately I think I have caused more trouble for myself. The only way I could get enough leverage to pop this excessively torqued fan nut was to place a bar wrapped in cloth in the fan housing to lock in the fan. Now I think this has damaged the bearing, as now it's making a weird wining/scraping sound. My pully has the extra one for the air conditioning belt so it looke no where like the one in the Haynes manual and had no holes within the pully for me to brace it. Locking in the fan belt seemed like the only option. Is there anything I'm missing to stop this noise?

Thanks

THE WHINING AND SCRAPING MAY BE CAUSED BY A CRACKED FAN HOUSING. SEE IF THERE ARE IMPACT POINTS WITHIN THE PERIMETER OF THE HOUSING WHERE THE END OF THE FAN BLADES ARE MAKING CONTACT. IF NOT, YOU'RE LUCKY. A CRACKED HOUSING CAN'T BE WELDED. I KNOW. i HIRED A PROFESSIONAL TO FIX A CRACKED HOUSING ON MY SC AND HE ALMOST SET IT ABLAZE!
GET THE RIGHT SPANNER THAT HOLDS THE PULLEY WHILE TIGHTENING, IT'S WORTH IT.
ALSO, ONCE YOU KNOW HOW MANY OF THE SHIM WASHERS ARE GOING TO BE BETWEEN THE PULLEY AND ALTERNATOR, TAPE THEM TOGETHER WITH TINY BITS OF SCOTCH TAPE OR TIE THEM TOGETHER WITH THREAD TO KEEP THEM ALL IN PLACE WHEN FITTING THE PULEY, IT'S FRUSTRATING TO HAVE ONE OF THEM DROP OUT OT LINE WHEN PERFORMING THE TASK. THE TIGHTENING WILL PRETTY MUCH SQUASH THE TAPE AND/OR THREAD SO IT WON'T BE A PROBLEM.

I like to use just a hint of grease between the shims to hold them together while I install the pulley.
