Advice on selling my car...bummer...
Hey guys, it looks like my wife is going to lose her job, so I think I need to sell my project. Please give me an idea of value so I can price it fairly!
1977 911S Sunroof Coupe 1978 3.0SC engine with about 70k runs great Great clutch and shifter New paint Grand Prix White (done last year, original color) Black interior 15" Fuchs No rust and straight What is wrong: Exhaust leak from exchanger Brakes are frozen up. Rolls hard Front and rear windows are out Headliner is out Front seats are shot Needs carpet Door panels are not great Sunroof out Rear Porsche script reflector is off and has some broken posts What goes with it to fix it up! Boxster Front calipers (30k) Carrera Rear calipers (60k) TRE Boxster front caliper mount kit New SS brakelines New Wilwood prop valve 4 new Carrera Rotors (Zimmerman) Full set Axis Ceramic Pads New ATE Master Cylinder New Headliner New sunroof seal 22mm Carrera F/R sways 16x6 and 7 Fuchs Full B&B stainless exhaust 2in 2out New Weltmeister short shifter New Momo and Sparco wheels New window seals front and back New APC black sport seats with 911 specific brackets It is a great project car! It runs well, but I have not driven it due to the brake issues. As you can see, it has many new parts ready to go on. New Optima red top battery. All the glass is good. Interior is not that great, but the dash is good with no cracks and everything works. It needs a few more little things to be nice after the obvious is fixed. I don't want to sell, but I don't think I have a choice. Let me know what you think this is worth as is with all the parts plus whatever else I forgot. I have a car trailer and can deliver it within a reasonable distance. Thanks! Mike

Projects are the proverbial Pandoras box. Fortunately your car is one of the more sought after ones (3.0 doesnt hurt). I would look at what is for sale across the country (autotrader.com is a fair place to start) then look at the latest market update in Excellance, figure the average of all the 'running' cars then figure 50-75% of that.

The parts you list you have in order to fix it up are mostly all easy to install. You should be able to do the brakes in a weekend or two. The headliner is probably daunting - but you could do that too or have a shop do it for ~125$. My guess is you'd have a much easier time selling it if you at least got it driving, even with the exhaust leak. With a couple weeks of worth you turn a project car into a car that just needs carpet and heat exchangers.
Also, if you don't want to pay someone for labor on anything you're not sure about, maybe you could post on here and people would be willing to help out - lots of nice people on this board :-)

I feel for ya buddy. Nobody wants to part with a project that has their blood and sweat invested.
Once you've tallied up individual items like what you've mentioned, the car is worth more in parts than whole. (An unfortunate reality) That may not be an option but you'll probably get twice as much IMO. Don't sell it for nothing though. Post some pics and you'll get a more attractive opinions. Good luck Eric

However, as subtley mentioned above, the 3.0 is a HUGE plus for someone wanting to get into a 1974-77 car, it probably doubles the value of the project. That said though, the stigma of 1974-77 still hurts the resale value. I've seen running cars like this sell in the under $10K range. So, I would think you would be able to get $4K-$8K depending upon whether you could convince a buyer. That said, if everything is in order, these cars can be great fun with the 3.0L engine... -Wayne

It looks like you have some nice upgrades. Here's what I'd do: Keep the car and don't carry insurance (asuming it's paid for). Sell the new parts, especially the brakes. Keep whatever you need to ge the car back on the road and get the car running.
Then, after youv'e raised a little cash, you have driven your car again, and you know for sure your wife is out of work and no job in the immediate future, then sell the running car if you still need/want to. You'll do a hell of a lot better than 4K that way. Not that you'd have to settle for that, but running cars are like the bird-in-the-hand saying. Worth more than 2 in the bush (a basket case). |

Yah you better part it or you are limited to somebody local since it has to be towed and wont be worth traveling that far to pick it up unless you give it away.
One of the big problems with the middies (IMHO) is the narrow a$$.

You could probably get $4-5K for the engine, $1K or a little under for the tranny, $500 for the wheels, and probably $3K for the tub, plus maybe 50% of what you spent for the new parts you haven't installed yet ($2K?), around $10-12K. It is only by virtue of being assembled into a running car that these parts lose value and can only be sold for $4-8K.

I too have had to abandon a project or two. I have found that most project cars are worth more by parting them out. This takes time and energy, but if the project has some decent usable parts, you will get more than trying to sell it complete. Like the old story goes..... I'll give you a $100 for the whole car or $200 for just the parts I need.

Thanks guys, I think I will take the advice to get it together. I have all the parts pretty much, so I should just do it.
And if things work out, I will have the car driving and that is a good thing. I was figuring 8k would be a fair price for the package. Again, thanks a bunch guys! Mike |
